I have a Kenmore upright frost free freezer. It is approx. 5 years old. The door seems to seal Ok, and I don't have any problem freezing the food, however, on the bottom of the unit, ice builds up in the middle underneath the basket. We've cleaned it our several times, and it continues to build up ice in that one spot only. The basket actually gets stuck to the ice it is so thick. We've checked to make sure nothing was leaking to cause water build up. The door seems to still seal fine. It only appears in this one section.
I looked at the BACK at the bottom underneath of my Sears Kenmore frost free upright freezer and what was causing the ice buildup was very simple. At the factory, the assembler looped the little hose too high and when the water went into the hose it could not get out due to being too high in one spot! An ice dam will form, blocking ALL water coming through
and freezing up any more water coming down giving you a HUGE wad of ice that is scary!!! I just removed the screw holding the loop that holds the hose and put a bit of warm water down the little hole on the INSIDE (Behind the grate) to melt the remaining ice in the tube.You need to take out 4 screws and remove the grate to see this. I could not believe that this was the problem! I haven't had any ice build up since.Now don't tear your freezer apart before you try this trying to fix the compressor, thermostat etc. It may be the only thing wrong with it!
I am having the same exact problems with Ice forming in the bottom of my GE Freezer, and water pooling out and puddling on our floors. I have tried the Cleaning the Defrosting of the coil with a hair Dryer etc. Has anyone actual figured out what was causing there issues.

The defrost heater may not be working properly (timer stuck, heating element burned out, bad defrost thermostat,etc.). The unit should go into defrost mode about every 6-8 hours typically and last about 30 minutes (depending on model of freezer). During defrost cycles the compressor and fan do not run (don't want to keep cooling while trying to defrost). Once defrost is over, the fan and compressor get power again. What is the full model number for that unit?
Seems simple you have blocked defrost drain hole. find it and clear it out.

I have a Whirlpool Commercial freezer with the same problem. I cleared out the drain tube, and verified that it was clear by pouring a cup of water down it. The water drained quickly into the drip pan underneath the unit. It keeps freezing at the drain. I imagine that the defrost cycle/heater are working, as the coil never freezes up, and it is, in fact, the defrost cycle that's creating all this water.
I wanted to add another comment about thick ice in the bottom of a deep freezer. If you have this problem, your freezer "might not" turn on when its suppose to. The thermostat coil/tube runs low on the deep freezer and the ice may keep it from turning on. We recently had this problem and almost replaced the thermostat. As soon as we poured boiling water down the front wall, it kicked right on (was off for at least 3 days). Service man never showed. Been running perfect ever since!

If it's a frost free model, it could be caused by a plugged defrost drain. Every time it goes through a defrost cycle the water is supposed to drain into the compressor compartment. You can defrost it by unplugging it for a day or two and then remove the panel covering the evaporator coil. You should be able to see the drain tray under the coil and find out whats blocking it.

We checked the clear tube at the back of the unit, and it appears to be clogged. Not sure how to clean this?
My freezer is kenmore frost-free upright model 253xxxxxxx. Water has been freezing at bottom, have to pry ice up every 2-3 months. Last few months, food does not frozen solid - bread and ice cream soft, even on highest cold. Took inside back plate off, pried ice from drain, but unsure what to do. Suggestions? Thanks.

My freezer is now 8 years old and I've had this problem since I bought it. Repairmen came two or three times and said they fixed the problem, but they didn't. It's a definite design flaw. Wouldn't buy a freezer with this type of drain system again.
We have a GE Profile refrigerator/freezer and are also experiencing an ice build up at the bottom of the unit. Seal of the door appears fine.
My freezer fan and condenser came on and when I adjusted it down on the setting it went off. i then tried to get it to come back on and it would not turn the fan and condenser back on. it is ion my garage which is about 25 degrees. Could that be effecting the freezers ability to work. i do also have a build up of ice on the back wall of the interior of the freezer. HELP !
I have same problem with a Hotpoint FZA50P frost free freezer, engineers been 3 times seems that frost-free freezers still need defrosting due to the blockage caused by ice. This must be a design fault.
