Weird Headphone problem - vocals disappeared

After years of good service suddenly my trusted headphones are acting strange. I have had problems with the jack and cable on other headphones where the sound would disappear in one or both speakers when wriggling the cable. This is not the case here. The sound is in both speakers but the vocals are but a tiny whisper and the bass is very low in both speakers. It is like the perfect kareoke mode, which make this defect very interesting and cool but unfortunately it is rather useless to me ;-) I'm guessing there is some sort of phase/mono problem as it obviously is the centered sound that is gone? Somehow it negates itself without impacting the rest of the sound. Here's the question: what has happened and how do I fix it? I don't want to change cables unless I really have to as there always is a chance it will go awry, so I'm not doing that unless I'm 100% certain it will fix my problem :-)

The most likely explanation is that the ground connection of the headphone jack has become disconnected. This causes the mp3 headphones themselves to subtract the two channels from each other in a hardware kind of way. Again, I could explain this in more detail but I also happen to have years of experience with audio hardware, so you can just trust me on this Weird Headphone problem - vocals disappeared - smile.gif Try gently nudging your headphone plug to see if you can't get normal sound. If you can, it's certainly a bad contact. I wouldn't say this is a "normal" type of failure for an audio player, but it's certainly not uncommon.

Hi,

The audiolevel is much to low for a headphone.
You really need to use a headphoneoutput ( if its there) or a headphoneamplifier.
You tried to connect your headphone on line-level outputs.

Regards,
Gerard

I have a Denon avr 391 and it worked fine for 4 years. Now I cannot get any sound out of it. Any idea what's going on. Help

could be a bad headphone jack. There was a commong problem with denon receivers around that time where the headphone jack had contacts that would short and make the unit act like there were headphone plugged in even when there wasn't. Sometimes you can clear the error by inserting a headphone plug and unplugging it a couple times. If it continues to happen, then you can get the headphone jack replaced.

Music acting weird

If you've got a headphone plugged into the headphone jack remove it. If this issue is (still) there without a headphone plugged in and you have no bluetooth headphone paired (disable Bluetooth to test) then i suggests the headphone jack is faulty. You might have a look if there's dirt and/or dust inside the hole. Carefully try to remove it using a toothpick. Use no needles, no liquids and similar for this.

If the problem disappears with bluetooth disabled check the bluetooth gear.

My Acer Aspire 7551 headphone jack is broken

You just answered your own question. Same here, my jack only plays one channel (or vocals as you said), but when I push down on it or twist the male end of the headphone as it's plugged in, I can rig it. It's just shorted man, you need a new one. My issue happened when my friend tripped over the cord, while plugged into desktop speakers and it jerked it out. I am just having a serious issue finding any to order online so my local PC Repair shop can put it in.

I have a st69 and every time I record, the vocals while recording sound very chorus like in the headphones, but they sound fine when I listen to the play back, please help.

Check the mixer settings to be sure you are not sending multiple mixes or effects to the monitor (headphone) output. The output used for recording does not necessarily have the identical sound sources and mixing path as the headphone, so make sure the headphone is monitoring the same signal as the recording output.

Well i put music in the mp3 and the music sounds weird. the music dont sound like the music at all. like the sound was changed help!!

This device has fragile connectors in the headphone jack. Most of my headphones don't cause any trouble, but one of them always bends the contacts back so other headphones don't work properly.

Symptoms of this problem are: the sound becomes quiet; some frequencies are muffled or inaudible (especially vocals and mid-range); no stereo effect. To be certain that this problem is with the device and not the headphones, try it with a different set of headphones. If the problem remains, the device is damaged.

Unfortunately, the only solution is to open it up and bend the contacts back into the headphone jack so they can connect to the plug properly. This is an advanced maneuver, and you are very likely to break the device permanently if you attempt it. I've been doing this kind of thing for years, and this device was one of the most difficult to work with. Fixing it will be fun for bonafide hardware hackers, but everyone else will be better off just getting a new one. Give the old device to a kid who likes messing with electronics... they can probably re-purpose the battery and the case. :)

Sennheiser Hd 205 headphones stopped working properly

the problem is the cable from one driver to the other suffers from fatigue due to the bending of the plastic frame as the headphone fits to your head, causing copper cables to disintegrate.

the solution is to take apart the headphones (mini and regular Phillips screwdriver ONLY required) and solder a new cable in. in my case i used a standard coaxial cable for replacement.

once you have split the end of the senheiser cable output from cup 1 into its two parts you need to attach it to the equivalent connections on cup 2 (which u also need to split, i suggest using a modeling knife)

the red wire is insulated with ceramic coating much the same way as an electromagnet winding, the other is standard copper. you must attach copper to copper red to red with YOUR OWN cable.

the most difficult part is removing the ceramic insulation coating on the red wire, which i removed with a blast from a cigarette lighter. simple.

problem is your cable probably will not fit in the slot designed for the previous cable so i drilled a small hole in the BACK of the cup (silver colored horse shoe shape) and ran the cable outside the plastic case. not pretty but it saved me £40 for 2 hours work, which is not bad.

i am a trained mechanical and electrical engineer so u can trust.
