FixYa is great!
I just read the response by BlueGenie & it is EXCELLENT for Mac OS X too !!
I have a Mac, here is how to charge Garmin (I am repeating Blue Genie's instructions in Mac OS X style
1) Turn off the Garmin. (make sure it is disconnected from any power source)
2) Plug a mini USB cable into the Garmin and connect the larger end to a USB port on the Mac.
3) Wait now until the Garmin powers up, you will see "GARMIN" appear as an external drive on the desktop of your Mac
IN MY CASE: I also see the word "GARMIN" appear on the Garmin screen and an icon of a computer Hard Drive on the Garmin Screen. (This icon may or may not be displayed for all Garmins I am using the nuvi 205 )
4) Now hold the power switch of the Garmin all the way to the left.
5)Using your other hand, click on the GARMIN icon that you see on the Macintosh desktop and drag the GARMIN icon to the "TRASH/EJECT ARROW"
6) NOW YOUR GARMIN WILL SEARCH FOR SATELLITES AND WILL START TO WORK!
IF YOU UNPLUG THE GARMIN FROM YOUR COMPUTER, YOU WILL GET THE MESSAGE
EXTERNAL POWER LOSS, SWITCH TO BATTERY POWER?
If that happens, you can replug it in, but you'll have to repeat steps #3 - #5 above again!
Here's how to do it using Linux.
1) Turn off the Nuvi.
2) plug it into the usb.
3) Wait until the Garmin and the hard drive symbols appear.
4) Hold the Garmin power switch to the left.
5) Right click and eject BOTH the Garmin AND the hard drive.
6) Release the power switch and the Garmin will search for satellites, without any battery level indicator which means it is on external power supply.
How do I charge a garmin gps from macintosh computer
This advice did not work for me... but this one from another site is perfect!
"Turn on the unit, touch the battery/power icon in the top right corner. Hold it for about 5 secs and the unit will go inta a test mode. Then connect the usb cable. You will see your batteries conditon and that it is charging. BTW you can exit this screen and it will still charge, and you can turn the unit off and on and play to your hearts content until you disconnect the cable..."
Nice.
I preferred this method because when I turned off the Garmin, a sign saying "Charging Battery" came on the screen...it was just more reassuring and I only saw it with rmcccabe's answer.
this worked the best on my mac, thanks

Methods to charge Garmin Nuvi 250 on computer:
Step1: Attach your device to the vehicle power cable.
Step2: After that connect the device to a computer by using the USB cable.
In which the device may charge slowly when connected to a PC. Some portable computers may not charge the device.
Step 3: Connect the device to the power adapter.
You can also buy an online adapter Gpsmapzz official website.
Thank you , to all who posted a solution , they are all similar if not the same.
But worked for me on windows 7. Garmin Nuvi charging via USB.
Cheers Guys !!!
Insert the memory card into the memory card slot on Garmin
Nuvi 250 GPS device. The memory card slot is located on the left side of the
device. Push the card in until it clicks. (If you inserted a memory card that
already has pre-installed maps and files, there is no further action required.
The device will access the new maps based on the address you enter.)
Connect the Garmin GPS to the computer using the USB cable.
The mini-USB connector will need to be inserted into the rear of the Nuvi 250;
the larger end is inserted into the computer's USB port.
Locate the computer file that you want to download to the Garmin
memory card. The Nuvi 250 is capable of reading JPEG formatted images and GPX
formatted Waypoints and other mapping-related files. Right-click on it. Select
"Copy."
Select the "Computer" folder from the computer's
desktop Start menu. Double-click on the "Removable Disk" drive that
represents the Garmin Nuvi.
Right-click in an empty space within the drive and select
"Paste." The files have now downloaded to the memory card and will be
accessible through the Nuvi 250 menu options.
Good Luck, and do rate the solution if got help

I have windows 98
will not connect to computer
You do not need to connect it to a PC. You can charge it from a USB charger. The GPS will not go into USB mode then, and you can turn it on and off at will.
