Our refrigerator is 1 year & 1 week old. A few days ago it started making a noise that sounded like a motorcycle just after you closed the refrigerator or freezer door. (Like something kicks on to cool it down after the door had been opened). Yesterday morning it was noisy but still cooling. Yesterday at supper it was no longer cooling and displayed ER where the refrigerator temp setting is usually displayed and FF where the freezer temp setting is usually displayed. This morning, I pulled it out and unplugged it for a few minutes. A few hours later, I heard it dump a load of ice and opened up the doors and it appeared to be working fine and it is no longer noisy and the error codes are gone and the temperature settings are displayed again. There had been ice accumulating on the back wall of the freezer that appeared to be from the ice maker spraying water too hard and it splashing there but it was not blocking the air flow. This had melted off by the time I unplugged it and plugged it in again. The repairman was here but did not know the codes to get diagnostic information and has not replaced any parts. Has anyone else had this problem? Is this going to occur again on my refrigerator? Thank you
I had the same problem. I can tell you that simply unplugging the fridge and letting it defrost isn't going to work. You need to get take it apart.
I had the Er FF code about 2 months ago and let the freezer defrost for a couple hours and it started working again. Then two days ago I got the error again. This time I decided to get inside there.
First and foremost, UNPLUG the fridge and TURN OFF the water!
Next empty everything out of the freezer and start taking it apart. You have to get everything out of it to get that back panel off. This includes the ice maker and the rails that the drawers slide on.
Now that the freezer is completely empty there are two screws that hole the back panel on. In my freezer one is a white screw high in the center and one was a gold screw in the little panel that the ice maker hooked up to.
Next grab the back panel by the little fins on the top of it in the middle. Give it a good firm pull, but take care not to yank it too far... it's still connected by wires back there. When I pulled my panel out I found a HUGE chunk of ice on the top of the panel just to the right of the fan that feeds cold are to the fridge. Get that thing off of there taking care not to damage the foam insulation and watch those shiny metal fins that are behind the panel.
While you're putting it back together try to dry everything off as much as possible (I tried see the bright side of the whole evolution and realized I could really clean my freezer).
Once it's all put back together plug that baby in, turn on the water, and enjoy the next four hours as it gets back to being cold.
I'd say you need moderate tinkering skill to do this. If you only own one screwdriver and you never use it you should probably call someone.
Hope this helps!
Is it still working?
Thank you, thank you, thank you! My family and my frozen food thanks you!
Thank you. We did this last night and removed the chunk of ice and put everything back together. My husband works on furnaces so is used to tearing things apart to repair. Unfortunately, after a minute or so of plugging it back in the ER FF showed up again and there is absolutely no ice left in there. This morning it is still there and the temp won't go below 50 degrees. The store I bought it from eight years ago no longer sells them because of the poor service from LG and the inability to get parts from them. Wish I never bought this brand.

Andy, the ER of course stood for error and the FF indicates it was in the freezer fan motor. There was no fan motor signal for more than 65 seconds. This can be caused by a bad motor, bad connections to the motor or something obstructing the fan blade. With the sounds that you were describing, sounds like you had a hunk of ice stopping the fan. You should call the tech back and have him check out the evaporator compartment along with the ice-maker fill tube so it doesn't happen again. For future reference the codes following the ER: FS=failure of the freezer sensor, rS=failure of the refrigerator sensor, dS=failure of the defrost sensor, dH=failure of the defrost mode itself and FF=failure of the freezer fan motor. ....Catriver...post back.
I had the exact same problem with my LG refrigerator. You need to follow the instructions of the person who posted solution #8 (simply unplugging the refrigerator does not work or is a temporary fix). You need to empty the freezer and remove all the railings (including side). Then you will have full access to the inside back wall. Next you need to remove the screws to the inside back wall and gently remove the back wall being careful not to break the wires connected to the fans. Here you will find a massive amount of ice buildup which is causing the problem. Once you remove the back wall you will be able to remove the ice and everything shoud work. Note: All you need is a screw driver and time. I paid a lot of money for this refrigerator and it has been one problem after the other.
Andy and Catriver, I have the same issue as Andy. Our warranty was up on August 18th. I think LG quality is appaling. $1200 for their product and it fails just after one year. The temperature won't re-set. Andy, do you have a resolution yet? How much did it cost you? Have you complained to LG? The repairman will be here this afternoon at 4:PM. Good info Catriver. BTW- I just wanted to reply. I don't have a solution other telling evryone DO NOT BUY AN LG PRODUCT!! DAMN, AM I HONKED OFF!! Rascal F.
Andy and Catriver, I have an UPDATE!!! The repairman told me that the computer module is the problem and LG has since re-engineered it. He probably talked to 8 different people at LG service but he finally got them to APPROVE the $400 repair bill and install the updated module. My unit was 2 months out of warranty.
The repairman said he has fixed the same issue 7 times in the last week here in the Cincinnati area.
To reverse what I said earlier...... I must say now that I am impressed with the way LG stood behind the defect.
Andy, I see your message was posted on the 18th and this is probably old news to you by now but just in case they treated you otherwise I thought I would let you know.
RF
Andy, after re-reading your message the answer to your Q. is that YES it will happen again. It could take a few months or a year but it will happen again. You did the right thing by unplugging it and melting the ice. The ice build up however did not come from the ice maker. The repairman says it builds up because the faulty computer shut the fan off early in it's cycle and slowly the ice builds up and impedes the fan.
RF
ok....had the ER FF error....so I took the freezer door off....took the back panel off...and used a blow dryer to get rid of the 10 lbs of ice that had built up in the back....everything seems to be working just fine now

Had the same error message. Learned that LG makes the Sears Elite model that I have. It had been making a noise for about a week and ordered a new fan from Parts Store Outlet. Got the error message last night. Removed the inside back panel of the freezer and found a large build up of ice on the panel and around 1/4 of the fan shroud. Removed all of the ice build up and it has now been running for 24 hours and working fine. Probably get the new fan by mid week and will hold on to it for a while before I return it.
I wish I had read some of these complaints online before I purchased my LG! I've had the same problem with my unit and at first they refused to cover the repair! When I called them to ask about the error code they made service arrangements and sent a repairperson of their choosing. A month after the repair was made I got a bill for $170! After calling back to complain they "extended" my warranty yet still refused to cover the earlier repair. They have since paid that bill. I have another error now that they're going to cover also. It's an ER DH. Involves the unit's ability to defrost itself to prevent it from freezing up again. I forgot to mention, my first issue occured 2.5 months out of warranty! Hopefully we're at the end of our difficulties with these units. Steve
I've had the same issue multiple times. The first time was 10 months after purchase. LG sent out a repairman who knew nothing about the refrigerator. Long story short, they ended up replacing the entire unit after about 2 months of haggling back and forth. I have now had that refrigerator for 16 months and am sitting here looking at it completely empty with the doors open waiting for it to defrost (this is the 3rd time I've had to do this since I received the replacement). Extremly poor design.
I hate LG...i have had so many problems. No one calls you back and service is terrible. and the quality of our expensive fridge is appauling.
Well, I got a fan noise and the FF error code which means there is an issue with the freezer fan. How do I get to the freezer fan?
I'll never buy an LG product again. This issue started a year and three month after purchase. LG corporation is totally useless and will not stand by their product.
I am so appauled at the quality, and service of of 2 year old LG fridge with ice despenser, which cost us $3.500. I was so excited to buy a new fridge after 20 years, and now wish I would of kept my old Amana.
After only a month there was a hair line crack in the Chef Fresh draw. I called and left message at LG and no one called me back it was after a month that I finally got someone. Then took another month to get someone to come out....and when a serive man came out he brought me the wrong part. Took another 3 months to reorder right part. Then the same thing happend again to the same drawer ..this time I called LG and asked if there was a recall on a possible manufacturer defect, and they said no and they proceeded to send me another part and the same thing happen I got the wrong part delivered I now have 2 new drawers that are useless because they are for a different model in my possesion. I called Lg to return them and they never came to get them.
And just recently the wheels on the crisper drawers on both sides snapped off, and the crisper lid cover hinges snapped off.
And just today my dials on our fridge are all blank and a ER FF sign has come on. which I have discovered means a Failure in Freezer fan motor., my fridge is not working at the freezer is starting to thaw....great I am dreading calling LG. Here we go again, it will be months before my fridge gets fixed.
I will never buy another LG product again.
I guess we've been lucky, we've had our LG french door bottom freezer for about 8-9 years and now it is malfunctioning :(. This one was a replacement fridge to the first one we bought and we even upgraded to a larger one ($3500) at that time. Seems to me their service has really changed over the years, that's unfortunate. They even paid for the food we lost which was about $250 worth. We don't get the errors from the many posts above but the temperatures on the display are going crazy. When we unplug and plug back in we hear the motor start but it stops after 1-2 minutes. The food in the fridge and freezer are not as cold as they should be and beginning to spoil. Has anyone had this issue ???
So I just experienced the FF Error on my LG Side-by-Side Fridge. For some reason, the freezer fan is not running. The recommendation was to unplug the unit for 4 hours. This is recommended incase the fan is froze up. If this doesn't work, then more than likely the control board is bad and will need replaced. Extended warranties are a blessing when this happens.
I have the error code "Err FF" for several weeks now. I have been unplugging the power to fix. I am now defrosting the freezer the old fashion way. Pans of boiling hot water. This should melt all the ice. I have kept everything cool in the refrigerator side. I just open the freezer side and it is a steamy jungle. I could hear ice melting from the back. I think an hour should do the trick. I will let you know the outcome. 2/05/13 MJM

My 19 month old $3,500 LG does not give me any error codes, but in the last two weeks has stopped cooling, and stopped making ice in the ice maker. Wonder if it is the same problem with the fan icing up. I can get the fridge running again by unplugging briefly, then plugging back in.

I agree with everything you say..... I have my LG for 14 months, and it started to have a motorcycle noise. After a few days, the error ER FF came alone. I read your comments, and cleaned the back of the freezer. So far, so good, lets see for how long. I wonder whether LG has a better solution. Do no pay for a technician to come and fix it... this is a waste of money!!!! the problem will probably appear again within a few months... especially in the summer.
Thank you to the people who post on this site. I have an LG fridge - the first problem was the ice maker - it had a slow drip which meant it would freeze up and never work. Finally decided to call the tech and he shortened the water supply tube as well as replaced the solenoid. I only connected the water line about 1.5 yrs after buying the fridge so luckily I called him within 2 weeks of my 2 year warranty. I never even thought of how long my waranty was - lucky for me. Also - the tech company said I was very fortunate because LG had since changed their warranty from 2 years to 1 - and I bought the fridge the last week that was happening - blink luck on my part.
He then noted that my circuit board was an older version and it needed to be replaced talking about ice build up on the freezer fan. I said great - also at no cost. I did some quick internet searching to see about melted fridge lights and freezer fans - and said again luck was on my side - I had not experienced any of that and I did get the circuit panel upgrade which should have prevented that.
Well this morning I woke up and saw the ER FF error code on my freezer. I had noted some ice build up on the back side of the freezer but thought nothing of it because my problem was solved - right!? Wrong - I had to follow the instructions on this site to take the whole freezer apart - first using hairdryer to softner the ice - and then remove the back panel. I saw the freezer fan was still able to move freely but was almost covered in a ice nest. No wonder if kicked out and gave an error code. Put it all back together - plugged it in and it works. Lets see for how long and how frequent I have to do this procedure. I am guessing every 6-8 months based on the time the tech was here to replace the circuit board. That means if I keep this thing for 20 years I will have to do this 30 times - man that is crazy. But at least I don't have to pay a tech $250 each time.
I've had the same EE FF error just happen to me. Speaking with LG, they inform me that the best thing to do is turn the unit off, then allow enough time for the ice and condensation from the melting ice to fully evaporate. Otherwise the problem may occur again. According to LG, many people with this error allow too short a time between turning the unit off then turning it back on (trying to preserve their food). I left mine off for ~ 10 hours and hope that was enough! I'm still unclear however how it happened in the first place!
Kenmore elite trio made by lg has aerror code of err-s
I've been able to revive the freezer fan for varying amounts of time by directing a hair dryer at the fan vents for about 5-15min. Unfortunately, it tends to fail again at very inopportune times (like when we're away for an extended period of time). The revival has lasted anywhere from a few hours to six months.
I saw elsewhere on this site (http://www.fixya.com/support/t566861-lg_lrfd22850sw_frige_code_says_er_ff) that trimming some excess insulation from the bottom of the housing will allow water to properly drain into the drain pan.
I have, no, HAD a two year old LG with this same problem. Luckily I had a three year extended warranty. After many services calls and losing my food, I now have a brand new GE Profile in my kitchen. If you're under warranty, pursue this as a Lemon. This is evidently a defect that LG cannot fix, could not fix, and when you buy top of the line, most expensive, you shouldnt have to replace it in a year or two. I'll never buy LG again!
This ER DH or ER code seems common on this site just shortly after the warranty expires. We have the same problem within 13 months of ownership. Is the most efficient solution for ER DH to unlug then reconnect the refrigerator? Do you need to defrost the freezer? The timeliness of all of these occurrences is suspect.
Thanks for the info, I too was thinking of buying an lg, guess I'll stick with ge.

This is the exact same problem that I am having except mine is a side-by-side. The Er FF code is present and the water spray started about 1 year and 1 month after I purchased the unit. The unit is now 2 years old and multiple calls to LG has accomplished little more than costing me $10 for them to send me the wrong part for the freezer.

Having the same problem. I had to unplug my refrigerater for the entire day. Lost all food. A week later got the same message. Message now comes and goes. I have a service rep coming by to service the refrigerator tomorrow. I've only had my fridge since 11/07.
Not happy with this fridge!
I have the same problem. I have had to defrost the freezer 3 times and now the fan has finally quit all together. I have been informed that this is a very common problem and is likely to happen again after repair. The repair guy suggested I buy a new refrigerator if I don't have the extended warranty. He said it will be cheaper in the long run.
My Sears Kenmore Elite Trio Refrigerator model # 795.77569600, with display message ER FF, appliance quit cooling and freezing sometime last night. Apparently, the freezer fan quick operating. Samsung must manufacturer the parts for both LG and Sears since it appears that both operate with the same motherboard and electronics? Called our local appliance repairman (not Sears) who came by within the hour. I assisted him in removing all items from the bottom freezer and we removed the rear inside cover to find that neither fan was working. Tested the fans with a meter reader and found that they had power but, we did not know if it was enough power coming to the fan since the owners manual does not give you any technical information relative to the display or electrical diagram, etc. He indicated that I would need to call a Sears repairman since he did not have any information to assist him with this service. We were in the process of moving the unit back onto the wall when the unit reset intself and the fans began to operate( display was again displaying the temp and icons etc. in normal mode) and then it went off again!!! I went to my panel box and flipped off the power to the refrigerator, waited 5-10 seconds and it reset itself again. It is working for the moment. I intend to call Sears and request a source for technical information relative to this model. Hope this helps someone out there.
I have the same problem. I purchased my refrigerator from Home Depot three years ago. I unplugged the refrigerator for three hours as advised by the LG service department, It defrosted and is working again.
A local service person is coming tomorrow to replace a defective part which does not enable the defrost cycle to work. The part should be delievered tomorrow. There are so many problems posted on the internet about this refrigerator -there should be a recall.
Good luck with yours.
I had the same problem. Same time period. 1 year 2 weeks Not happy with LG at all.

I have the same problem at least once a week. my refrigerator is so warm now that i lost meat that i purchased yesterday. I am sick of it already.
i have an lg french door refrigerator frezer drawers will not freeze how do i find error codes
yes this is a very common problem with this particular model, usually you have to take everything out of the freezer, pull the back panel off of the inside of the freezer and the compressor is usually ice up and the fan is hitting the ice which is what makes the loud noise, once the fan stops working altogether you end up with error code ER-FF which means the freezer will start warming up, you can wait for the ice to melt naturally or you can get a hair dryer to melt the ice off the compressor but be careful not to burn any wiring present around the compressor and use a lower heat setting on the hair dryer, this usually happens about once every 12 months.

It sounds to me like your flex tray ice makers is not ejecting all of.the ice cubes and when it goes to refill it is either hitting on one of the ice cubes or just over filling because some of the ice cubes are left in the mold. I would suggest taking a look at your ice maker to see if that could be the problem because they eventually start doing that. Sometimes the mold is cracked or sometimes it just doesn't want to eject all of the Ice Cube's anymore for some reason. if it isn't cracked, you can try spraying some food grade silicone spray on to the mold or you can just replace the entire ice maker $100 and very easy to install just two Philip screws and one connection.
