Toshiba satellite A210 11-P crashes when i disconnect the power lead

Despite the battery showing 100 per cent fully charged if i switch the power cable off from the mains supply and remove it to use the laptop fully portable it crashes and keeps allternating from black screen to blue screen.If i press the Enter key at the black screen command option Start Windows Normally it tries to boot but keeps failing and doing the same thing.When i reconnect the mains power it boots up and works o.k.The machine can only be used permanently plugged in the to the mains.I phoned Toshiba technical support and the bios was updated but it did not solve the problem.This machine is just over 1 year old and out of warranty.All help will be much appreciated Thanks.

    Joe....Thanks for your efforts but after doing all this the machine is still doing exactly the same thing.The battery appears to be fully charged and is accepting a charge o.k......all the info lights are as they should be ???.......Best Wishes....roverboy.

From Toshiba, try step-charging the battery or Battery conditioning procedures:

Batteries don't last forever. All types of batteries gradually lose their ability to hold an electrical charge as they age. Eventually, the computer's battery charge indicator may show that the battery contains less than a full charge, even though the battery has just been fully charged. The computer will then not run for as long a time from the battery as when the battery was brand new.
You may prefer to simply replace the battery if this happens, but you may also wish to try 'step-charging' the existing battery per the following instructions.
This procedure should work for the battery in any Toshiba notebook. Follow it only when you find that the computer will run from the battery for just a short while.
Check the User's Guide for more specific information about charging the battery in your computer .

Procedure

Step-charging the computer's battery

  1. Unplug the AC adapter from the computer, and turn ithe computer on. Let the computer run from battery power until the computer turns off, indicating that the battery is fully discharged. Time this interval, but not with a software clock running on the same computer.

  2. Remove the battery pack from the computer.

  3. Unplug the AC adapter from the computer.

  4. Wait at least 30 seconds. The first time through this procedure, use a soft cloth to wipe the battery pack's contacts and the AC adapter's plug.

  5. Re-insert the battery pack.

  6. Plug into the AC adapter into the computer again and check the fit of its plug in the wall outlet, making sure the connection is secure.

  7. With the computer turned off, let the battery charge until the battery status light or icon glows green, or otherwise indicates a full charge.

  8. Unplug the AC adapter from the computer.

  9. Remove the battery.

  10. Wait at least 30 seconds, then re-insert the battery.

  11. Plug the AC adapter back into the computer.

  12. Let the battery charge again until the battery status light turns green or otherwise indicates a full charge, again.
Repeat this procedure, starting from step 1, at least three times. Each time, check to see if the computer runs longer from its battery than the previous time.

Battery Conditioning:
IMPORTANT!! Interruptions in the charging cycle can be responsible for an issue called "memory effect" which may reduce the battery's charging capacity. Whenever you suspect the battery performance is not at it's optimum you should try using the following "Battery Conditioning" procedure.

Before you start: Turn off your battery saving features temporarily.

***IMPORTANT*** Repeat the following steps 2-3 times!
  1. Unplug the power cord from the computer
  2. Turn the computer on and let it run until it shuts itself off.
    Note: Using the CD-ROM to play an Audio CD will speed the discharge.
  3. Plug in the power cord (While the system is off) charge the battery until the battery light changes from flashing green to solid green
  4. Remove the battery for 30 seconds and then replace it.
    Note: If the battery light isn't lit, wait a few moments, if it still does not light check your power connections.
  5. Continue charging the battery until the battery light turns solid green once again.
    **REPEAT THIS PROCEDURE 3 TIMES**

The voltmeter test provides general indicator of battery condition. Check the voltage of the battery to verify that it is in a 100 per cent fully charged condition. If the open circuit or disconnected voltage reading is below 12.6 V, charge the battery and then recheck the voltage after the battery has set for one to two hours. If the voltage reading is 12.8 V or above, perform the load test described below.



The load test measures battery performance under full current load and is the best indicator of battery condition. Load testing a battery tat is not FULLY CHARGED i.e. at 12.8 VDC can permanently damage it. Fully charge it first and then let it stand for at least an hour before the load test is done. You also need a load tester AND you should know how to perform a load test. Often the best way to load test a battery will be to take it to a battery shop and have it done there.



VOLTAGE and STATE OF CHARGE FOR AGM BATTERIES IS:

12.8 VDC is 100 per cent

12.6 VDC is 75 per cent

12.3 VDC is 50 per cent

12.0 VDC is 25 per cent

11.8 VDC is 0 per cent



COLD CRANKING AMPERAGE (CCA) for a DYNA battery is 270

FOR A 19 AMP HOUR DYNA AGM BATTERY



BATTERY STATE OF CHARGE is 12.8 VDC is 100 per cent Charge; Rate of Charge is N/A



BATTERY STATE OF CHARGE is 12.6 VDC is 75 per cent Charge; Rate of Charge at 3 AMP is 1.75 hours at 6 AMP is 50 minutes at 10 AMP is 30 minutes at 20 AMP is 15 minutes



BATTERY STATE OF CHARGE is 12.3 VDC is 50 per cent Charge; Rate of Charge at 3 AMP is 3.5 hours at 6 AMP is 1.75 hours at 10 AMP is 1 hour at 20 AMP is 30 minutes



BATTERY STATE OF CHARGE is 12.0 VDC is 25 per cent Charge; Rate of Charge at 3 AMP is 5 hours at 6 AMP is 2.5 hours at 10 AMP is 1.5 hours at 20 AMP is 45 minutes



BATTERY STATE OF CHARGE is 11.8 VDC is 0 per cent Charge; Rate of Charge at 3 AMP is 6 hours, 40 minutes at 6 AMP is 3 hours, 20 minutes at 10 AMP is 2 hours at 20 AMP is 1 hour



The figures listed above assume that the battery is charging at room temperature. If warmer than room temperature, use a slightly shorter charging time. If colder, use a slightly longer charging time.



The use of constant current chargers to charge maintenance free batteries is not recommended. Any overcharge will cause dry out and premature battery failure. If a constant current charger is the only type available, do not exceed the charge times listed above and do not continue charging the battery if it gets hot. When charging, never exceed 15 volts for more than 30 minutes.



If the battery gets hotter than 110 degrees F or 43 degrees C during charging, discontinue charger and allow the battery to cool. Overheating may result in plate distortion, internal shorting, dry out and/or other damage.

If you don't do this, it will quickly lose battery life due to what is known as the 'memory effect'. The memory effect means if you don't follow the above procedure, your battery will only charge up to the percentage of the last charge.<br /> <p>For instance, if you discharge it to 30 per cent, it will only charge up the remaining 70 per cent. Do this repeatedly, and the 30 per cent will become unusable, giving you an effective 70 per cent charge even though the indicator will still show a 100 per cent charge each time you charge it.<br /> <p>Nickel Metal Hydride</b></i><br />Ni-MH batteries are similar to Ni-Cd batteries, although they are less susceptible to the memory effect. They also have a higher capacity.<br /> <p>Lithium Ion</i></b><br />These are the latest type of batteries, and have no real problems as far as the memory effect is concerned. The problem with these is that they lose their effectiveness if overcharged or left for a long time with a full charge. Always discharge these batteries if you're going to be storing them away.<br /> <br /></span>

The toshiba laptop a505 S6980 will not charge the battery when the AC is plugged in and dies immediately if unplugged . Meters shows 0% available (plugged in), charging. But it is not really charging.
