A loud backfire after trying to start engine. Later same day it stopped, lost all power as though no battery. Jumpstarted, but will not hold charge. Now loud knocking sounds like at bottom of motor. Checked oil, no oil regfistered. Week before, oil level was fine. Before I go to mechanic that I do not know well, please offer some suggestion. I've had everything replaced previous for backfiring, stopping, hard start: starter, distributor, though used, catalytic converter, 2 mufflers blown, sensors, neutral safety switches, fuel pump, water pump, new plugs and wires, another fuel pump, but goes back to backfiring, stopping, had motor replaced with 98 grand jeep motor. I think non-mechanics messed up with retrofitting in areas that did not fit, mechanic disapeared so can't know what he didn't do. Please help. Thank you. Have spent all night listening to knocking sounds on UTube. Fits the thrown rod sound.

How is this car running? Remove the vacuum line from the pressure regulator on the fuel rail and check to see if there is any gas coming out of the line. If you see gas then the regulator is bad.

use a jack to force the muffler into position, or you may have to move the hANGERS accordingly
if the converter is rattlin then it needs to be replaced because the element inside is broken. if the jeep still does not run try removing the catalytic converter to see if the restriction is too much. should start if the converter is restricted. if it doesnt maybe its whatever caused the converter to go bad in the first place
check if you have spark if not replace crankshaft position sensor as this controls spark

Sounds like you have a ignition timing issue or it is possible your engine is running extremely rich and a partially plugged muffler and after the fuel vapors accumulate in the exhaust system then you get an explosion causing your muffler to expand. However I would first look at ignition timing and if that checks out move on to exhaust system or emissions systems.
