I have a 7-8 year old Kenmore side-by-side refrigerator. It has an icemaker and water/ice in the freezer side door. Within the last few months, it has developed a problem with knocking noises. The noises do not occur while the compressor is running. Apprximately every 15-20 minutes, you will hear a series of 8-12 knocks or "raps". It lasts about 5-6 seconds, then goes away for another 15-20 minutes. I have tried cleaning the cooling coils, but this did not stop the noise. It is not the icemaker. The noise seems to be coming from underneath the refrigerator. The fridge seems to be cooling and working properly otherwise.

the motor could be on the way out. Put your hand (carefully) on the motor (back of the refridgerator), if it is too hot to touch then the motor is burning out and will need to be replaced.

If it sounds like it may be coming from the back of the freezer, it is the refrigerant "popping" as in feeds into the evaporator. Some models have this issue and there is a "fix" for it. (yours may not be this one though). Although the sound is annoying, it doesn't really hurt anything. That's not to say the icemaker isn't making the noise, or something else. But I am not sure where it is coming from.

Sometimes when it's to close to the wall it will make noises try pulling it out a bit.
