I got this same message and got so mad at my phone that I finally started getting really drastic with my choices on how to fix it. First I took an eraser and rubbed it on the battery and where the battery means the phone. Thinking that maybe it was dirty or something. I don't know if I saw that solution from here or somewhere else be someone said to do it and it didn't work, but you should try it just in case. Then I took a Q-tip and dipped it in some rubbing alcohol. I rubbed it on the same spot where the battery meets the phone and on the battery and it didn't work either, but still try it. It may work for you. Eventually I gave up because it sucks to sit through ever attempt and hope that it works when it doesn't. I just sat there with my phone and turned it on and off and watched the message in boredom, but them my phone finally died. So I just put in on my dresser and forgot about it for a while. I woke up the next day and had plans to check my phone and I couldn't find it, then I remembered that it was broken and got up to go get it off my dresser. I tried turning it on but it was still dead. So I just decided to pug it in and attempt to have another day of desperate attempts to fix it but instead of it just saying 'use genuine batter' and staying like that, it had a message the said 'battery charging' and while it said that a picture of a battery beneath it flashed. I was confused because 1. I’ve never seen this message before and 2. I’ve tried plugging it in before but it still didn't work. So I pressed the power button while it was still plugged in just to see what would happen and it turned on like normal. the verizon wireless label came up and my normal screen came up. So maybe you should just let your battery die and leaving it dead for at least 8-15 hours then plugging it in and turning it on while it is plugged in. It was…extremely relieving.
I dropped my LG and it cut off. When I tried turning it back on it said replace battery with genuine battery and started counting down from ten and would cut off. I read Perk_Orgon reply below about trying the rubbing alcohol. I put some rubbing alcohol on a tissue and dabbed it on the battery contacts in the phone and then on the battery itself. I waited about five minutes, placed the battery back into the phone, hit the power button, and to my surprise the phone turned on and worked fine!! :) Thanks for the tip!!!

Well I have the enV as well. The phone has a lot of problems, the most popular is the Use genuine battery error. It happens when the phone is forced off. By things such as the battery falling out,the battery dying, or dropping your phone and it goes off. It usually says the error message for about 2-6 hours. So when it happens you just need to keep trying to put it on every couple of hours. Well hoped I helped a little bit.
That previous post was good for a laugh and it worked! Cleaning the contacts for the battery connection (on the battery and the phone) did solve my problem. Make sure when you clean any contacts/elcectronics with rubbing alcohol that you wait a few minutes for it to completely dry before re-installing the battery.
I have the same problem. Best thing I can tell you is to avoid cutting your phone off at all. Make it a last resort. Otherwise you have to wait awhile before it works again.

me too! i don't know what to do about it. i'm trying to turn it on but it doesn't work.
Same problem here. The phone is brand new, plenty of juice left, but getting the "Use genuine battery" message, can't turn phone on.
It is the same thing genuine battery problem how do you fix it?
mines does that too. i've tried contacting BOTH verizon and LG and they are no help.
dis friction sucks du
If my phone ever dies or is shut off whenever i try to turn it back on i get a message that says please use genuine battery and than it shuts off
my phone says the same thing with using genuine battery and then powers off in 10.
I'm having the same problem with my enV 2. Verizon sent a replacement phone, but the new one is doing the same thing. They're sending me a new battery now, but I'm not holding my breath. I tried to get them to replace it with a new phone (different model) but they don't seem to like doing that. So now my phone is dead, it won't turn on, it won't charge, and I won't have my new battery until tomorrow. Which means I have to drive home tonight in what's supposed to be a blizzard, on back country roads, with no cell phone. Thanks Verizon.
mine has been dead for over a week now and it has the verizon logo come on too when I plug it in but it flashes sporadically between that one and "battery is required" and still doesn't work. I got a new battery for it and it looked like it was charging at first but went back to the same verizon and "battery is required" messages....so I'm looking for a new phone....
