Relatively new, rotary hammer drill will rotate, but has no hammering action

Look for a lever that has signs hammer/drill or just drill Place the lever in the hammer position.

Could be a couple things, do you have the selector in the rotation mode, also there is an internal clutch that might have broken or the splines on the spindle might be rounded. If it is the clutch you would have to take it in for repair, it is extremely tricky to work on. Take the bit out (make sure you are using the right bits for this tool) and look at the splines to check their condition. Let me know if I can help more
SOURCE: rotary hammer won't rotate, hammers very good
If tool hammers brushes still good. Motor runs hammer action.
Take hammer/ drill switch lever off by removing small plastic plug in center with small screw driver.remove indicator handle off by removing #8 torx screw and lightly pry off. There is a pin and spring that lock tool into hammer or drill.Check for broken spring or binding spring and pin.If binding , clean and grease.

There is a clutch in the main spur wheel of the unit. These sometime begin to slip, on rare occasions they will slip to the point where the drill will not rotate. If you are interested the part number for this clutch is 1617000817.
SOURCE: Makita HP1640 hammer drill dual mode - 2 hours
Exchanged Makita HP1640 hammer drill for a new one. The 2nd drill did the same thing in under an hour!! Will return for refund. Instructions say the Forward/Reverse switch must be in a full up or down position for the Hammer/Rotary switch to move; well, it is and the Hammer/Rotary switch still stops at a 1/2 way point between modes. Although I can still use the drill, instruction warnings say not to because it may potentially burn out the motor. I'll have to go with a different brand this 3rd time around. It seems to be a design flaw.

you need to get that service,
the grease causes the hammering.
and probably too much pressure was applied
to it.
