Hello I have a Toshiba Portege r700 series Netboook and I installed windows Xp onto it. After installing xp it worked fine, all the drivers installed as well but the battery went dead and it shut down unexpectedly. When i tried rebooting it, it displays a blue screen of death. I went into the Bios and changed the configurationn from Acih to compatability mode and the system booted fine but the image was extremly distorted. What could be the cause of this and what can i do to fix this problem? thanks

Well... this is common on newer laptops. It is due to the fact your HDD is SATA (Serial ATA) and Windows XP CD does not have the drivers needed to recognize it. The solution I use is a bit High Tech: to remaster your Windows XP CD including the drivers needed. Or, just settle to live with Vista until January, when Windows 7 will be available to the public. If you are not faint of heart, google this: nLite; with this program you can remaster your XP CD. (You need a working PC with CD-RW to actually do the job).

Sorry to say that there are no XP drivers for that model laptop, it only supports Vista.

If the screen went blank after the driver install, sometimes clicking the mouse on the screen will bring the picture back. It sounds like the monitor is having a conflict with the resolution the driver is throwing out. Reboot the laptop and when you see the Toshiba splash screen, tap F8 until you see the multiple boot menu. Scroll to Safe Mode with networking and reboot. If the screen comes up, go to the control panel > System > hardware > display adapter > click on the plus sign and double click the reported adapter.click on driver tab and select roll back driver > click yes to any prompts and click ok. Reboot normally and see if that clears the problem.
