Car was making small intermittent noise.took to garage ended up with bill for nearly £500.They said caliper had broke which in turn was the probable cause of my wheel bearing being ceased onto my brake disc, they heated to remove and cracked my nearly new brake disc bill also included brake pads and 5hours labour.Friend said I should not pay for discs as garage should have used press , Put this to garage and they told me you can only use press for new or nearly new bearings ,and if they are ceased on solid like mine apparently were, the only option is heat!!Friend also states if my caliper was broken and my bearings ceased solid to brake discs the car would be making an almighty noise and braking would not be normal. My brakes were 100% ok when I drove into garage and the noise i went in with I still have !!! Friend sat in car and went for short run and identified noise as coming from rear of car and probably my rear caliper .The wheel in question which the garage have 'fixed' is the front drivers side. Would greatly appreciate anyone's views on this.Linda

Hiya this does sound iffy ? but b4 i comment /offer an opinion could you or your friend jack up the wheel in question that has had repair and look at how the brake disc is secured to the actual hub assy that wheel bearing is housed in ? also caliper? cracked?? is it now a new one? have never had problem renewing front or rear bearings in past using the correct tool/s a hydraulic press is the best method for removing excessive siezed components as for your friend now saying noise is from rear ? it may be pads worne or disc/s corrosion/scoured so investigate and update what you discover ? sounds like big hammer garage?

i got the same motor as you and i am gettin alot of noise from front drivers side. been told that the bearing is shot. was told is quite an easy job. but had problems gettin discs off as they had become ceased to wheel hub now im waiting for garage to heat em up to get em off. but from one bearing problem has now led to me having to replaice both barings both wishbones and discs and pads
