How did you fix your problem

I called Masterbuilt and they said they no longer sell the elements. you have to buy the cabinet @ $189 for the 40" model. I decided to pull my element and see if i could find one that would work by going to an appliance repair parts store.
When i pulled the element, i found that the terminal that plugs into the element was burned/melted in two. i replaced the terminal end, pluygged it in and tis working fine.
to remove the element, you need to remove the element cover/chip loading chute first. its easy, 2 sheet metal screws and 2 nuts and 2 machine screws. one of the nuts/machine screws is a little hard to get back on when you reassemble but it can be done. after the cover is removed, you will see 3 screws where the element goes through the back wall. only removed the left and right ones. do not loolsen or remove thecenter one. after you remove the 2 screws, you can coax a small amount of the wire leads out into the open and you can inspect them to see if they are broken.
if the problem is truly a bad element, you will have to find an element somewhere. i cant help with this except to say that Masterbuilt customer service says they are negotiating with their supplier to see if they can sell the elements seperatly. they hope to have that resolved by summer.

According to Masterbuilt customer support, shorting is a known issue in the electric smokers. I also had my wire(s) to the element short out (one of them completely diconnected from the clip). I ended up drilling out the 30 rivets on the back cover and removing it. What I found was pretty scary. All three wires were burnt and damaged, as was the insulation surrounding the metal box that houses the connectors, the box itself, and the back cover. The burning pretty much covered the entire lower left quadrant, but luckily somehow stopped there. This smoker was just over a year old. I decided to cut out the damaged wires and splice in a slightly higher gauge (14) extension for all three. I attached new connectors to the ends and then I wrapped anything that was within 12 inches of the connector box with wire insulation. I also insulated the connector box with sheet gasket (Pep Boys) cut to size and used the remaining gasket between the insulation and all the wiring. You can re-attach the back cover using 10x1/2 metal screws and create a watertight, heat resistant seal by applying a bead of high temp RTV (also from Pep Boys). I tested the smoker before putting the back back on, then installed the back with 6 screws and ran for 5 hours a safe distance from my house. Once it cooled down I pulled the back, checked everything, applied the RTV, and put the back back on. It has been working fine since, but I just don't trust it not to short out and possibly burn so I keep it quite a bit further from my house now. To remove the element follow the instructions from the other poster, they are very good. Good luck.
I own a master built smoker and the female disconnect in the heating element has deteriorated. What are the specifications for a replacement disconnect? i.e. ampage, insulation, wire gauge
Yes ,it was very helpfully,I removed the back cover and I found the same problem ,one wire burned out, and the others two not in very good condition.The heating element is ok.

My Smoker's heating failure was caused by a connector eroding on the heating element after only nine months of use. I short-term fixed it and intend to do a complete re-wire at the time of the next anticipated failure.
My Masterbuilt has no rivets in the back. Any idea how to access the wiring?

I just bought a new Masterbuilt Smoker by default two weeks ago I borrowed a friend’s to smoke about 30lb. of Salmon to then can. Ran the smoker every day for three day. ON my last batch the heating element would not work. Talk about Frustrated! The Smoker was only 2 yrs. old.
Knowing I borrowed I felt I had to replace. So online to Cabelas and I ordered my buddy a new smoker and had it shipped. I then found this website... GOT TO LOVE the internet. I saw many other people had the same problem. Found an Answer...
The Problem was one of the connector to the heating element was poor quality and if you don't clean your smoker on a regular basis. The heat and moister caused the small copper connector to corrode and the wire to come loose. I took a wood chisel and cut off all the rivets on the back. I was then able to pull the back off with no damage and access the small box in the lower back. I found the connector. Went to the hardware store and bought a replacement for .75 cents. A pair of wire crimpers and the problem was fixed. I also bought ½ inch Sheet metal screws to secure the back it was good as new. So I returned the smoker to my buddy and kept the new one. When it arrived I saw Masterbuilt has since fixed the problem and provided an access panel to the element and connectors.

Thefirst poster was very accurate with the instructions and the 3rd poster backed up the first poster.
My problems are exactly the same as the 2nd postr, my heating elment is intact but the wiring was coroded and burned crisp with in 1/2 in ch leading to the connecting point of the heating element. Again the connecting points wre clearly ok but 1/2 in before that point was bad.
Anyone have thoughts on who or what company can service hi. Electrical work is not my forte despite the helpful detailed post??

So after reading here the Master built smokers are porly wired No recall on this? I also have one just over a year old and sounds like I have the same problem.
I do BBQ contest and i like to use a brand that i can refer to anyone perhaps i have baught the wrong smoker.

Me too Guess its best to clean more regularly? I am fixing the same issue burned connector to burner.
