Well David, it sounds like you need to unplug and open back and try to stick your head up in set and look down into CRT's tubes, you may have phopser damage on one of the tubes, you will need to turn on to see it just be careful not to touch anything electrical
The popping noise is not a good sign. You definitely have a shorted horizontal IC and probably a bad flyback transformer. You will find several bad capacitors that contributed to this problem. The cost of repair will be more than your depreciated TV is worth. Sorry..look for a new one. Thanks for asking and show a few hands of support!
I have the HD-56G657. When I first bought the TV, we did not know that you have to let it cool/shut down completely before trying to turn it on again. Plus: It was under warranty Minus: It took almost 6 months for them to finally fix the problem. (A sound board or something was fried) I think the part if you are not still covered under warranty is like $180 +labor.
the lamp has blown replace if got instruction book that came with tv shows you how if not got the lamp is behind cover on side or frount cover that comes off by undoing two black screws on back corners (each lower corner) anda sharp pull will remove cover
i would take it to a shop and have them repair it so its done right.they can be funny the way they act but they are normally good tvs id take it in for repair
kinda like a water mark... i fixed a few of these and to me it sounds like something in the optics. eather on the mirror or in the engine... send it to a shop while its still under warrenty. they probally will replace the engine for you under warrenty.
