external writers are plug and play , they do not need a driver. the disk i think your referring to will only contain writing programs but there are many free writing programs on google search. just plug the writer into any usb port and windows will find it and install the drivers automatically
control panel admistrive tools,computer management,device manager scroll down cd dvd rom drives right click you can you can update driver,roll back driver,or select properties general troubleshoot, select driver click to reinstall drivers click update driver or uninstall then reinstall hope this helps
go to your burning software and look up disc info if it blank you will not be able to read it but it will show disc size space etc let me know how you get on
some dvd brands dont work with all dvd writers, so your option is to try another make, if that works ok then it's not a writer fault it is just that the media make is not compatable.
if you start to see problems with all makes of disc then the writer laser is faulty and a replacement drive neccasary.
