Machine has stopped spinning and makes a weird noise when it is supposed to spin.
Steve R is right except that if the splines in the rotor are stripped you will have to buy a new rotor or the bolt will just continue to lossen itself up. The rotor is $64.33 online. Still a ten minute fix, after you wait a week for part delivery.
Take silver cover off back of machine (4 screws). Tighten the bolt that goes through the motor to secure it to the drum. YOu might have to have someone hold drum to keep it from spinning. 10 Minute fix.

With a 10 year warranty on their direct drive washer motor, eliminating a clutch or transmission, those enerty star LG's generally preform very well. (one of my customers runs 10 loads a day, 365 days a year in his)
Sounds like the shaft may have seperated from the three spider arms which actually turn the drum. To remove, you may have to grind end of bolt off motor shaft to facilitate dissassembly. It's a rather involved process. Prevent future mold and mildew issues by cleaning out the drain filter and then using a front load washer cleaner on longest, hottest cycle with no clothes (like ahfresh or washer magic, or whirlaway hot tub cleaner, to name a few.) then use not more that one tablespoon of HE detergent and a max of a teaspoon of fabric softener (if you use it) per load, as these machines are using very little water. (when you split the tub to replace the drive spider, use a pressure washer to clean out the inside of the outer drum and the back side of the inner tub) BTW, I have not found any reason to not stick with my LG washer and dryer. My seven year old set worked many a load, and still works great.

IE:
• Water supply is not adequate in
area.
• Water supply taps are not
completely open.
• Water inlet hose is bent.
• The filter of the inlet hose clogged.
Solution:
Check another tap in the house.
Fully open tap.
Straighten hose.
Check the filter of the inlet hose.
UE:
• Load is too small.
• Load is out of balance.
• The appliance has an imbalance
detection and correction system. If
individual heavy articles are loaded
(bath mat, bath robe, etc.) and the
imbalance is too great, after several
attempts to restart the spin cycle the
machine will stop and the error code
will be displayed.
Solution:
Add 1 or 2 similar items to help
balance the load.
Rearrange load to allow proper
spinning.

Check and see what type detergent you are using. I bought regular liquid detergent and the machine began making noise during the spin cycle and the drum would not spin. I was informed that you have to use detergent that is labeled HE (High Efficiency). The regular liquid detergent will suds up during the wash cycle which then causes the drum to slip and not spin during the spin cycle. What you are hearing during the spin cycle is the drum slipping. Unplug your washer for 30 minutes and let it reset. This lets the suds dry out. Run a cycle with no spin to rinse out the drum. This should eliminate your problem. If you have clothes in the machine, run a cycle with no spin, just don’t add any more detergent. Then run the normal cycle with spin a second time with no detergent. I hope this cures your problem.

THE SOUND YOUR HEARING IS THE REAR BEARING BETWEEN THE STATOR AND THE DRUM. IF YOU'LL PULL THE BACK PLATE OFF THE WASHER IT'S PROBABLY STARTING TO GET A LITTLE DRIP RIGHT ABOUT NOW TOO. BEARING COSTS AROUND $20.00 OR SO AND IS RELATIVELY EASY TO CHANGE. YHE EASIEST WAY TO MAKE SURE IT'S THE BEARING WITHOUT PULLING IT OUT AWAY FROM THE WALL IS OPEN THE FRONT DOOR AND SEE IF YOU CAN SHAKE THE DRUM UP AND DOWN AND SIDE TO SIDE.
Testimonial: "Very good suggestion about checking for bearing wear by rocking the drum"
SOURCE: LG WD-8050FH LOUD noice when spinning & 'funny' burning smell!!
I had the same symptoms and almost dismantled the whole machine to locate the root of the cause. The issue was one of the 3 arms of the spider (like a 3 spoked wheel that connects to the rear of the drum and holds it in place and provides the drive shaft to through to the motor at the rear), had snapped after weakening from corrosion due to undissolved washing powder building up in the grooves.
To prevent this, do a hot wash every few weeks to dissolve the powder, don't think your saving the environment by using only cold washes, this should be in every washing machine manual to save the environment from waste from un-economically repairable appliances.
The burning smell was the unbalanced drum leaning heavily on the rubber shroud on the front between the drum and the outer casing. The replacement spider part was only about AU$60-80.
To check if this is the problem you may be able to tell by opening the door, and reaching in from the front with your palm up about a hand distance till you go past the rubber shroud and just touch the stainless steel drum. Grip it gently with your four fingers and pull towards the front (to you) about 1cm or two, with about as much force you would need to open the machine's door. Rotate the drum approx one third of a rotation and repeat, do this 3 times and you should feel one point give more than the others.
If no luck try again in sixths of a rotation, you can gauge the distance by the 3 plastic agitators attached on the inside wall of the drum.
Note: get a price on labour first to replace the spider, as this will be probably more than half way to a new machine, and then the cost of the part, and the call-out fee if you can't get it into a service centre.
What's the point of having a long lasting stainless steel drum when the key part that connects the drum to the motor is a weak cast iron / alloy part.
Ask your local service person what units have quality parts before buying a new machine.
ps: the loud noise is probably the cracked arm rubbing or the unbalanced drum hitting the sides and making the machine jump.
Hope this all helps!
