sounds like the door lock mechanism. if this cannot signal it has engaged, to the board, no other function will work (you don't want the washer going with the door open, trust me :) )

most likley to be a fulty switch in the door lock, its not switching off when the door is closed and the programer see's it as an open door so wont start the washer,,,its a safty thing? call out the repair man,,

I have to unplug so it will shut off,

when I plug in and hit start, red light stays on again,
