I want have S-S Sound and HD video capability with all of my units. However, I see that I only have HDMI IN and not OUT on this unit. I only have Componet cable OUT NOT IN, Digital Optical IN NOT OUT, Composite video IN and OUT with S-Video IN and OUT. I can go from the Fios TV Top Box to the THD-50 in a number of ways but then I have to go to the TV by using another hook up. There two (2) ways that I can go from the TV TOP BOX to the JVC unit and then to the TV in the connections. However I also have a HD DVD and VHS video recorder player that I want to hook up to the JVC unit to have S-S sound capabilies also. The TV, player and JVC unit all only have HDMI IN no OUT. What do you suggest?
I called the JVC tech service rep. I went from the Cable box to the JVC unit with a Digital Optical Cable, from dvd/vcr player to jvc unit with a Composite Cable and Audio Cables. From cable box to tv with hdmi cable and from jvc unit to tv with componet cables and cable box to dvd/vcr with Audio/ Video and S-Video cables. This allows me to have the cable TV access and Surround sound in all mode. I have HD and Digital surround sound in three diiferent modes. Everything is working great. Thanks for the opportunity for help just the same.

HI, Fist of all you have to check the HDMI cable. It should be 1.3a version. Another thing is ONKYO TXSR806 is capable of outputing HD video (1080p) at its HDMI output By upscaling. If your tv is not a Full HD one then it will not be able to show the video.
Do one thing Reset the ONKYO to factory default. While in standby mode Press and hold the VCR/DVD Then press the standby button "Clear" will show upon the screen. Ajin
When connected to an HDMI compatible unit, an uncompressed digital audio and video signal is transmitted, enabling you to enjoy high quality digital video and audio with just one cable. When connecting to an HDMIcompatible HDTV, the output can be switched to 1080p, 1080i or 720p HD video.
Panasonic uses Viera link option between their video products.
When connecting with a Panasonic TV (VIERA) or a receiver equipped with 'HDAVI Control' function, linked operations are possible. [Linked Operations with the TV (VIERA LinkTM HDAVI ControlTM)]
Please use HIGH SPEED HDMI cables that have the HDMI logo (as shown on the cover). It is recommended that you use Panasonic's HDMI cable. Recommended part number: RP-CDHG10 (1.0 m/3.3 ft.), RP-CDHG15 (1.5 m/4.9 ft.), RP-CDHG20 (2.0 m/6.6 ft.), RP-CDHG30 (3.0 m/9.8 ft.), RP-CDHG50 (5.0 m/16.4 ft.), etc. Non-HDMI-compliant cables cannot be used.
(the above is from the owner's manual of this model - page 40 tells you about linked operation using HDMI HDAVI control and how to set it up)
As for Gem HD, this unit has an SD (standard definition) digital tuner - it will not decode/receive HD channels. I should point out that 7mate also is a HD channel but is not specified as such in any menu or even their website. (I found this out by accident when I tried to record on timer 7mate one day and all I got was 'unable to decode HD channel' banner at the bottom of a blank screen)
Channel 11 is a SD channel - so this will work with your DMR-EZ48 as will all the other relevant main free to air channels (ABC/7/9/10/SBS). GO! is also a SD channel.
To be able to record HD to this combo unit you will need a HD set top box connected via its AV inputs. HDMI simply means you will get HD video quality from the combo to the TV, you will not receive HD channels from your HDTV to your DMR-EZ48 unit via this method.

upconversion to hdmi, if you use a component connection? probably not. if it is
capable of upconversion, check your input menu settings. or

The HDMI on the Sony STR-DA5200ES does not pass the audio. You
need to either connect an optical or digital cable from your audio source.
If it is a cable box or DVD player there should be audio outputs in
addition to HDM. Hope this will help...
If Audio Select (Page 44 and 98) is set to HDMI you will hear silence if no HDMI signal is present. I think AUTO is the best choice here.
-------
On Page 98 of the manual it says a bunch of things concerning automatic signal detection and input selection.

NOTES
This unit transmits audio and video signals input at the HDMI input jacks to the HDMI out jack only when this unit is turned on even if "S.AUDIO" is set to "OTHER".
Unfortunately only the higher end Onkyo Reciever pass audio over HDMI for sound. 605,705,805,905 exc. Your reciever will carry Video over HDMI but you will need a digital optical cable for sound.
