Mine is a GE washer. I replaced the shocks by accessing them through the bottom front panel. I took a couple of hours because the attachment points are hard to access.

Washer Problems Washer noise when spinning

With the growing popularity of front load washers comes a whole different set of washer problems then what was experience with the older top load washers. Front load washers are built quite a bit differently and have many different parts than top load machines.

One of the most common problems with front load washers is that the shock absorbers that hold the tub in place can break. These shock absorbers steady the tub during the wash and spin cycles. It is when the spin is happening that they take the worst beating. It is also during the spin cycle that the breakage will be most evident. If your load is even a little bit out of balance and the shocks are broken, you machine may dance all over the floor and sound like an airplane about to take off. The tub will flounder around uncontrollably and the clothing will come out very wet because of the tubs inability to maintain the spin speed needed to wring out the water.

To see if your machine has broken shock absorbers, remove the bottom cover and look in. About halfway back on either side will be a small cylinder that moves in and out to absorb the movement of the tub. Often the loop that has a pin through it to secure it to the machine will be broken. Sometimes there will be no visible damage, but if you unhook one end of the shock, the slide movement will be very easy and there will be no resistance. The shock should be in and out fairly hard; this is what holds and steady’s the tub of the machine.

The parts are easy to find online by doing a search for “appliance parts” and then entering your model number in the box provided by most websites. The replacement is fairly easy and can be done by most people with a bit of patience and a few hand tools.

Frequent out of balance problem

All front-load washing machines have shock absorbers that are used to dampen the tub movement in the spin cycle. The shock absorbers or struts are attached to the base frame and to the outer tub and you will need to remove the front panel or the rear panel to access them. When shock absorbers weaken or become damaged, the machine will often make a loud banging sound during the spin cycle and if the symptom is not corrected, can lead to damage of other components. Inspect the shocks for signs of broken attachments, leaked fluids or a weakened dampening action and replace both shocks if worn. Remove power from the appliance before attempting this repair.

How to replace rear shocks

Removal & Installation

  1. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  2. Support the rear axle and slightly lower the vehicle enough to lessen tension on the shock absorber.
  3. Remove the lower shock absorber retaining nut and washer.
  4. Disconnect the lower end of the shock absorber from the mounting stud.
  5. Remove the shock absorber upper end retaining nut and washer.
  6. Remove the shock absorber from the vehicle.
To install:
  1. Install the shock absorber onto the upper and lower mounting studs of the vehicle.
  2. Install the washers and retaining nuts. Tighten the upper and lower retaining nuts to 22-30 ft. lbs. (30-41 Nm) on 2001-02 models or 22 ft. lbs. (30 Nm) for the upper bolts and 47 ft. lbs. (64 Nm) on the lower bolts.
  3. Lower the vehicle.

Dear Sir, How do you change an 87 mitsubishi mighty max front shocks without any compression equipment? Please email me at [email protected]. Is there a book with instructions regarding this...

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION
  1. Support the vehicle safely on jackstands. Support it at a height which will allow sufficient room to reach the upper shock absorber mount.
  2. Remove the wheel.
  3. Remove the upper shock nut, washer and bushing.
  4. Remove the lower mounting bolt(s) and remove the shock from the vehicle.
  5. Install the shock absorber in the vehicle and loosely tighten the upper shock absorber nut. Make sure the install the bushings and washers before installing the upper nut.
  6. For 4WD vehicles, install the shock absorber so that the white paint mark at the lower side of the shock absorber faces the outer side of the vehicle. Install the lower shock absorber bolt(s). On 1992-95 Montero torsion bar suspensions, tighten the single lower mounting bolt and nut to 65-76 ft. lbs. (88-103 Nm). On all other vehicles (whether torsion bar or coil spring suspensions), the two lower shock absorber mounting bolts should be tightened only to 7-10 ft. lbs. (9-14 Nm). Fig. 1: Install the shock absorber so that the white mark faces toward the outside of the vehicle - 4WD vehicles, except 1992-95 Monteros 86668006.gif
Fig. 2: Install the bushings, washers and nuts in the order shown - except 1992-95 Monteros 86668007.gif

  7. On 1992-95 Monteros, tighten the shock absorber installation nut so that the dimensions shown in the illustration ( A and B) are at the standard values. These standard values are: A - 0.04-0.08 in. (1-2mm), B - 0.06-0.10 in. (1.5-2.5mm). WARNING
When tightening the nut, be careful not to bend the stud pin of the washer assembly.
  8. On all other vehicles, once the lower mounting bolt(s) are tightened, tighten the upper shock absorber mounting nut all the way to the end of the thread on the shock absorber stud, then tighten the locking nut to 9-13 ft. lbs. (12-18 Nm).
  9. Install the wheel.
  10. Lower the vehicle to the ground. Fig. 3: When installing the upper shock nuts on 1992-95 Monteros, make sure measurement A is 0.04-0.08 in. (1-2mm) 86668008.gif
Fig. 4: When installing the upper shock assembly, make sure its components are positioned as shown - 1992-95 Monteros 86668009.gif
