I've just bought a new Acer Aspire 5742Z and the smart pad has suddenly stopped working. Any idea whether it's likely to be a hardware or software issue and how to fix it? I've tried connecting a mouse and that works fine.

Hi jennylewry...

To fix an unresponsive touchpad on your laptop, reactivate it by using the Function key on the keyboard and the Fn key.

This process is different for each computer manufacturer.
If unsure which Function key enables and disables the touchpad, try each one at a time and then
attempt to use the touchpad after each one.

A...Locate the "Fn" key of the laptop keyboard.
The "Fn" key has different colored text or the key is a different color.
B...Locate the function (F1 through F12) key at the top of the keyboard that disables or enables the touchpad on the laptop.
The key typically has an icon that resembles a touchpad with a finger touching it or a touchpad with a diagonal line through it.
C...Press both the "Fn" and touchpad Function key at the same time to reactive the touchpad on your laptop.
Move your finger along the touchpad to verify that it works. Press the combination at any time to disable the touchpad again.
Note: Mac computers use "F2" to enable and disable the touchpad.
D. Sony Vaio Users: Start>Settings>Control Panel>Double click the Mouse icon.
Look at the top left hand side of the page, at the top and make sure that the "Tapping" box is unchecked, if it is checked then, you will uncheck it.
Please take time to rate me thumbs up

Some of my keys have stopped working

Flip the system upside down with the lid open and shake the crumbs out of the keyboard. If this and a can of air doesn't solve the issue, you will need to replace the keyboard.

My touched pad is not working coz i've been using a mouse recently then by the time that i want to use my touched pad already its not working anymore.. what should i do.?

I believe Acer has a special key combination to reactivate the touchpad... using the Function Key (Fn). If not that, there should be a program on startup which puts an icon in your toolbar at the bottom of your screen. Click that icon for all your options.
Failing these solutions... try deleting the hardware in control panel/system/hardware/device manager/mice and other pointing devices, reboot to see if it now working as it should (USB mouse disconected-of course!)

My acer laptop keeps closing down/ Any ideas or ways to resolve it

Laptops sometimes shut down to protect your hardware. If the fan has stopped working for example it may be overheating. Is the bottom of your laptop hot?

My skype used to work fine in my acer aspire 5742 but now it says there is a problem with a programme and it does not open skype anymore... everything else works fine. any solutions..????

You are probably experiencing another Skype outage. We are, too, this morning (6-7-2011). Click on Skype and it crashes. Reboot and it fails to connect. It's not your computer, it's Skype. I've read many other reports of the identical problem across the net.

On my acer 5742-7645 my touchpad has stoped working?

Hi,

Just check for the key combination on your keyboard (ex. Fn + F4 or F5..depends on the what key was designed for the touchpad), the touchpad might be locked.

If it is not locked, reinstall the touchpad driver, but it this still doesn't work, boot to Safe Mode to check if it does. Touch pad still not responding in Safe Mode would mean hardware failure.

Hope this helps.
