Error light is flashing
Got the same problem, but in fact it WAS a paper jam. Open both the back panel (can you see the orange roller clearly? If so, no jam) and the front panel. Grab the handle and take out the toner and drum and check there is no paper. Chances are there will be.
Much to my surprise, I did indeed have a paper jam. Thanks so much for this post. I was getting really ****** off about the red light until I found your solution.
Thank you. I thought I had checked everything including paper jam, but it was indeed a paper jam caused by a tiny rip of paper 1cm x 50mm must have torn of a sheet at some stage. I finally found it took it out and put the toner/drum back in and and presto the printer error light went out. Everything is fine. Did not see that tiny bit of paper the first 4 times I seached - so if anyone else is having the same error problem keep checking cause it is most likely to be a paper jam or a tiny bit of paper or plastic hiding somewhere in there! Not too much can go wrong with this basic laser printer.
Thanks My problem solved It was paper jam.

Hold the GO or the flashing blue button down for about three seconds, and while continuing to depress the GO button, turn the power off to the printer. Wait about five seconds, then turn the printer back on, wait three seconds, then release the GO button. Everything will be reset. This works assuming you don't have a paper jam, low toner, etc.
Could be several problems
front cover not closed
fuse cover -behind back cover - not closed
memory full
Cancel the print job if you want to delete the remaining data in the printer memory. To cancel printing, press the Go button while printing for about 4 seconds until all the LEDs light up. The Ready and Error LEDs will flash as the job is being canceled.
It worked for me! Thank you.
The Toner LED is on.
The Toner LED is on. what can i do for this Toner Led Idication pls help me it is urgent for me? pls............

I tried everything said above no paper jam. Then I turned of the printer, then back on and it worked!
Also don't go sticking your fingers in the back by the back roller. I burnt my finger on something that was super hot.
I took some of the paper out of the tray. i guess it was too full. maybe they shouldn't allow you to put that amount in if it's going to stop it from printing? smart thinking, brother.
Well I'll be! Of all the simple solutions, often the most difficult are the most overlooked. Mine was the old paper jam. I looked for paper jam, but didn't go deep enough into the printr. Thanks for the tip!

If the Error LED is flashing, use the steps below to check the following: paper jam in the drum area, fuser cover may be open, paper jam in rear, or memory full or print overrun.

I suspected a paper jam, so I pulled out the tray, and the next sheet was sort of being grabbed by the feed mechanism, so I thought that that was the problem, so I pulled that sheet out and thought I was done. But I wasn't. The error light kept flashing. You have to open the front and pull out the cartridge. Then maybe you'll see there is another sheet inside. Just follow the directions in the manual for clearing a paper jam.

I have the same problem - try what it says at this link. http://welcome.solutions.brother.com/BSC/public/us/us/en/faq/faq/000000/000000/000026/faq000026_015.html?reg=us&c=us&lang=en&prod=hl2140_all

Try to unplug the power from the print, wait 1 minute then plug back in.
This may remove the error.

Hi,
This is a common problem to your brother printer model 2140. You need to turn off your printer and take out the toner. Look for the side and you will see a small hole on both sides. This is the sensor. You need to cover it with electrical tape.
Here is a detailed video on how to do it:

Good luck and hope this helps you.

You need to open the front cover of the machine and remove the cartridge (drum and toner) On the top right there is a tab that you need to slide from left to right about 20 times, then bring back to home position

I have the same problem, and nothing will make the light go off. There is no paper jam. Both covers are closed. I have held the Go button down and that doesn't help. The printer will not print anything.
Same exact thing here. Flashing red "error" light, nothing in memory, doors all closed, even uninstalled and reinstalled
same exact problem. no paper jam. memory is not full. cover is closed, etc. I have checked everything but can't get the error light to stop flashing. very frustrating.
