there are 3 safety switches, clutch, deck and seat, Craftsman 247288810 Lawn Tractor Parts
take the cover off so u can access the coil, unhook the black wire from the coil, not spark plug cable, try to start it,if it starts then a safety switch is bad,if it doesnt, then jump the solenoid,if it starts then it is the seat or clutch switch,if you want to bypass safety switches, connect a switch to the ground and coil
1 safety switch under seat. 1 on deck engage lever. 1 on brake. It sounds like the brake switch is working. its most likely your seat switch that is bad or out of adjustment. you can try bypassing switch by unplugging it from wires and run a piece of wire between the 2 contacts on the plug with the wires. If that works you need a new seat switch.
Under the yellow seat is a electrical cable wrapped in plastic. It has a plug right on the underside of the seat. Rather than simply detatching the male plug from the female plug slide out the entire safety switch assembly from the seat. The switch just slides into position to rest on the bottom of the seat. The "safety switch" has a little plastic pin with a spring on it attached to the plug wire. Take slab of plastic/metal/wood and press it over the pin to the down position. Then rubberband and ducttape it in the down position. Then hide that garbled switch under the seat once again. Now you don't have to sit on the seat. An alternative would be to simply use the orange parking break when getting up out of the seat.
Switch under seat needs to be plugged in and make sure the pto lever for the blades is depressing the safety switch. If you are sitting on seat and seat switch is plugged in properly and it cuts off when brake is released then it is seat switch. It is about a $10.00 part; no big deal to replace.
There's a safety switch under the seat that grounds out the ignition when you get off. It's designed to do that so it can't run over you,if it's not running you can't get hurt.It also keeps you from cutting off your toes or anything else you might want to put under a running mower. You shouldn't bypass that switch for your own safety!
Did you try jumping the switch under the seat? Why would the foot switch shut it down? If it is the switch near the foot and you can't replace, then jump it. But be careful this will disable saftey features. Hope this helps.
SOUNDS LIKE IT COULD BE THE SAFETY SWITCH FOR THE KICK STAND ,IF THE SWITCH HAS BEEN DAMAGED IT WILL START UP FINE AND WHEN PUT IN TO GEAR AND CLUTCH IS RELEASED IT WILL DIE.(This is a safety feature)
