Had a local repairman out. He pulled back panel off of the interior of the freezer and defrosted with a hair drier. He replaced the defrost limiter thermostat. That was about 5 days ago. I have the controls set on the lowest settings and the freezer is still at -10 and the fridge is 30 degrees. It looks like ice may be starting in the freezer again. Any ideas?

you have a defrost problem there are Three parts to it a Defrost control board a Defrost Heater and a Defrost bi-metal thermo-disc I would check the heater first it is in the coils you are defrosting

Step 1: If the compressor runs all the time, turn the control knob to the OFF position. If the compressor still runs, unplug the unit, then pull off the control knob and remove the screws holding the thermostat in place. Pull out the thermostat and remove either the red or the blue wire from its terminal. Plug in the unit. If the compressor doesn't run, the thermostat is faulty. Replace it with a new thermostat.
Step 2: If the compressor runs after the wire is removed from its terminal, there is probably a short circuit somewhere in the unit's wiring. In this case, don't try to fix the problem yourself; call a professional service person.
Step 3: If the refrigerator or freezer runs but the box doesn't cool, unplug the unit and remove the thermostat with a screwdriver. Disconnect both wires from the thermostat. Tape the ends of the wires together with electrical tape, and plug in the appliance. If the refrigerator starts and runs normally, the thermostat is faulty. Replace it with a new one of the same type. Connect the new thermostat the same way the old one was connected.
Step 4: If the freezer compartment is normal but the refrigerator box doesn't cool, set the dials that control both compartments to mid-range. Remove these knobs (they're usually friction-fit). Then unscrew the temperature control housing; you'll see an air duct near the control. Replace the knob on the freezer thermostat and turn the control to the OFF position. Open the refrigerator door and look closely at the air duct. If this duct doesn't open wider in about ten minutes, the control is faulty. Replace the control with a new one of the same type. Connect the new control the same way the old one was connected.

And yes the defrost timer thermostat and heater are the most likely problem.
Do not let this keep running and running or you may lose your compressor too which means a lot more expense than now.

Hi, With the information you supplied i'm going to assume there is an ice build up at the rear of the freezer. Your problem is going to be with your defrost system. I will also assume you have the ability to repair this yourself. This is going to be one of three problems with your refridgerator, 1st thing to do is remove shelfs and panel in the back of the freezer...you should see ice build up on the evaporator...don't worry get a hair dryer and melt the ice. Next locate the wires for the heater...using a multi meter test the heater for condinuity...if the heater is bad replace it, If the heater is good replace the defrost thermostat..the stat normally is a barrel looking part clipped onto the evaporator pipe. The last possible problem could be the evaporator fan, have you heard the fan running in the past few hours?..if you are not sure pull the panel out to where you can see fan and watch it over an hour to see if it turns. Yes if the heater and defrost thermostat are good then the problem is the control board.
Turn the timer clockwise slowly until the compressor and fans stop. That should manually place the refrigerator into defrost. After a minute or so open the freezer door and listen for crackling or sizzle noise. That will be the sound of defrost. Wait about 30 minutes until timer comes out of defrost itself and if not turn the timer again until compressor and fans start again. If this works out like this then replace the timer.
