The internal components of the compressor are isolated from the case and supported by springs to cut down on vibration and noise. I have found this problem in the past. The compressor will still run normally. Ruud may authorize a replacement covered under warranty for the price of the compressor but they will not cover the labor costs. Check your warranty.

We have an 11 year old fisher-paykel fridge .For past 6 months several times a day it makes a loud knocking noise

If this noise happens when the compressor turns on and shuts off it is called a compressor knock. All the internal workings of the compressor are supported by springs, over time the springs wear out and become weak. When the compressor stops or starts the tourq causes the internal parts to hit aginst the casing of the compressor. Sounds like a clunk clunk clunk noise. If you can deal with the noise do not go out and replace the compressor cause it will work just fine like that.

My refrigerator is about 15 years old and has made a clunking noise when it shuts off since I moved into my home many years ago, but has always kept food cold/frozen. Recently, the clunk noise is getting a...

The compressor is sitting on springs inside a metal case. When it stops, the centrifical force is absorbed by these springs. If one or more springs become weak or break, the compressor hits against the outer case a time or two. (CLUNK CLUNK clunk) There is really nothing you can do about it, short of replacing the compressor. (read big bucks) NOTE: If you take a new compressor and give it a shake, you will hear the same clunk. If the noise is really bothering you, I'd say after 15 years, it's time to move that refrig to the basement and get a new energy star model for your kitchen. (the old one most likely has several more years worth of clunking before it truely dies)

Remove the rear cover at the compressor and check for loose mounting bolts on the compressor and fan motor.

Kenmore fridge, about 8 years old, making noise

The compressor on your fridge is mounted on rubber grametts and inside the dome the internal parts the do the pumping of the refrigerant are mounted on springs. When a compressor gets old some people complain about two much vibrating, this could be the rubber grommets the support the compressor. When one of the support springs inside the compressor is broken it will have a distinct rapping sound when the compressor shuts off. There isn`t anything you can do about this, short of replacing the compressor. It will eventually get worse untill something is seriously broken inside the compressor and the compressor will die. You may want to consider replacing the compressor now or purchase a new fridge. You will need to consider the cost of both and the age of the fridge" Is it worth repairing?". You can actualy find a repair company in your area from this site if you like, and compare the costs.I hope I have helped explained the problem well enough for you. I will help you as much as I can.
