Tip & How-To about Plumbing

Using Sharkbite Connectors Caution!

I just redid my shower/tub valve and did not want to solder connections because of space limitations. Guys at Home Depot were high on Sharkbites, which are kind of expensive, but I went for it.
First caution: They can be removed and reused, but the process is not as easy as they say. Second caution: When attached to a copper pipe, they are indeed water tight..no leaks. BUT, they do not lock onto the pipe and the pipe turns freely. My biggest problem with this was screwing on the new tub spout. There is hardly any clearance to hold the pipe from turning, so when you try to attach the threaded spout, the supply line turns as you are threading on the spout. I finally wrapped duct tape to the supply line and held it tightly so it would not turn, and just cut off what I could and stuffed the rest in the wall.
I have read that there is liquid solder which does not need heat, but my choice would have been a compression fitting for the spout line.

How can I replace a shower faucet with 5-1/8 inch spacing with something available now?

With such tight spacing you would probably be better off considering a single handle tub set. Central Bras makes a 6" center tub set, uncommon, available through Park Supply, part number: UBF633-T ph# 1-800-877-9449 which may be usable with only slight modifications to your surround.

I'm not sure what brands my faucet or handles are.

You can remove the center (Diverter valve) without turning water off, Will need deep well socket. Check the o rings and or washers and replace or take valve to Home depot to match with new. If you can't find one there go to local plumbing supply or ace. I turn hot then cold on and off real Quick while the valve is out just to clear anything that might be in lines. stand to the side or you will get wet! You might want to get new hot and cold valves while your at it just make sure to turn off water at meter before you remove them.

We were having a water pressure problem in the bathtub and were told to replace the 1222 cartridge no the hot water flow is affected everywhere. What now?

If it needs to be replaced then do that you might have to go to home depot to find out what you need to solve the water pressure problem usually the valves in the pipes could be an issue hopefully it's not something the plumber has to get involved with that can be pricey but call or visit your local Home Depot store so they can be better to assist you.

why does the water not flow from shower valve when turned on?

Do you have water coming out of the tub spout and not the shower head? If so how does the water get directed to the shower head,is it by pulling up the diverter on the tub spout? If water is still coming out of the tub spout then the diverter is bad and the tub spout needs to be replaced.

shower drips - seems to be increasing

Need to replace your internal seals inside the shower valves.
Go to Home Depot, Lowes, etc. and make sure you take your model number and maker of your shower and they can get you the parts to repair the valves to stop your leak.
If you do not repair it soon, the water leaking by will cut your metal seat and it will never stop dripping, you will have to replace the valve and it is a MAJOR job.
