If it was mine, I would buy a service manual for it. You didn't mention the year but the link below will take you to the eBay listing for them:

If this is the type you have you have to unbend and remove the cotter pin. Then tap out the cross pin. You can use a drift punch and a light hammer (or a dull nail if you don't have a drift punch) and tap it out. Do it gently so it doesn't go flying out of sight. There are a few versions of the cross pin , one type is tapered, another has threads but that type is for heavy duty stuff. On the top of the cross pin those types will have a indent for gripping or using an allen wrench or bolt type head or wing nut. Those aren't as common. Most likely it will be like the picture.

If your tractor does not have "live pto", then neither the pto shaft, nor lift arms when the clutch is depressed.

Had the same problem, but was my fault for bypassing the ballist resistor (my bad). Anyway, I fried the coil. Read all the posts and bought new 12 volt coil (it has been converted before I got it 13 years ago). New points, condenser, cap, rotor. Now it is just my timing is a little off, but I have strong sparky but not enough to fry my coil again.
If anything, keep the ballist resistor. it is needed to drop the voltage to the coil so it doesn't fry.
I have a Ford 8n with a new battery, solenoid and
8N's are positive ground negative run...hence the negative wire to the battery. Try jumping the starter solenoid and see if you have a bad solenoid. A second answer could be in your battery. You have a 6 volt battery so be sure to check the charge on the battery.
