first make sure the air intake screen on top of engine is not clogged with debris if thats not a concern you could have a faulty ignition coil etc your engine should have a two year warranty and can be serviced at no charge to you at your local briggs service dealer make sure and check your manual for the fine print though. Briggs makes a great engine and very rarely have I ever seen a problem allthough if you were to have an engine issue it will accur during the first few hours of opperation good luck

wip out the air cleaner and look to see if its not blocked up with dirt, they do **** up a lot of grass into them also look at the choke see if its coming off if its all ok take off the carberator float bowl to see if the float is not sticking down if it still smokes try changing the oil in the sump as if its to thick or there is to much in it it gets past the pistons
DLT 3000 Intek 18.5 Carb Float Stuck?
If it starts cold and runs for 10 min then it sounds like the fuel cap is not venting properly, try runnin engine with fuel cap loose and see if it dies. 9 times out of 10 the fuel cap is the culprit. Let me know
It was throwing white smoke out of ex now it dont
In my experience, white smoke is oil burning. Question is Why?
Could you have put too much in the engine? You might have broken rings. You at the very least have fouled plugs now. Clogged crank case vent?
Check the oil level and adjust as appropriate. Rings is a big deal. Plugs are pretty cheap and easy to change.
I hope this helps you solve your trouble.

How do i drain gas from 20hp 42in yard tractor?
The best way will be to take the fuel line off the carburetor or off the fuel pump, if so equiped, and put it lower than the fuel tank on the mower. Drain into a gas container. You can then put this gas in your vehicle to burn, rather than let it sit and go stale over the winter months.
If you are just taking the fuel out for the winter, and not for any other purpose, you can purchase some fuel stabilizer, called "Stabil", and put about 2 oz. per gallon of gas that's in your mower tank. Slosh it around a bit, start your mower and let it run, or take it for a spin around the yard to make sure you get the stabilizer mixed in well and down into your carburetor.
If you do drain the fuel for the winter, after you are done start your mowers engine and let it run the carburetor dry. That will keep it from evaporating too bad and gumming up your carb. Still a good idea to run some stabilizer thru the carb prior to draining the tank.
Blade is not running even when It is in the proper
Sounds like the blades do not engage when you put the lever in the engage position. Well it may be a couple of things, A spring has let loose from an idler pulley or the belt is needing replacement on the mower deck.
Find your model number underneath the seat; go to www.searspartsdirect.com. You can look up parts there when you have determined what needs replacing.
Good day.
Tractor won't start. Acts fuel starved.
you can to this in two ways. pull the out put hose off, turn the engine. be vary careful, to see if fuel comes out. or do a pressure test about 3 to 5 pds. check the tank. I have seen flays and other ?? in the tank plugging the lines. blow air throw the lines (not the pump)
My 20 hp kohler engine won't idle evenly it revs
you have a plugged jet in the carburetor from dirty fuel or a metal particle, u will need to pull the carb off and clean it out with compressed air and carburetor spray, the jets in these carbs are very tiny and even a spec of dirt can obstruct fuel flow cause a lean condition, which is what is causing your problem.

1st thing, check your dipstick up inside the cap part of it and make sure the O'ring is there and in good condition.
2nd, make certain when you put it back on that you get it on straight and firmly seated. They will only seat one way properly the other way creates a leak into the crankcase and causes oil consumption and smoking. You should be able to tell if it has been improperly installed by an excessive amount of oily dirt accumulated around the threaded area of the cap
