It is under the flywheel. Remove engine cover and then pull the flywheel. I found the best tool to pull one is a steering wheel puller-fopund one at NAPA store for less than $10.00. Might have to purchase a couple of longer bolts (grade 8) than the ones that come with puller. Once the flywheel is off, just some small screws to take out to remove stator.

Check your gas cap to make sure it's still venting properly. If the vent is clogged, it will build up pressure and not allow the fuel to flow properly.

You can find new gas caps at PartsBuggy.com here.

Engine is misfiring and has weak spark.

The timing could be off somewhat because the overhead valves are in need of adjustment. They require it periodically for the engine to run correctly.

if you got the solenoid wet you may have shorted it out, to check it follow the wire from the engine back to the ignition there should be a small device with several wires on it two thick ones and a few smaller ones. to test to see if the engine will still start put the key in the run position then carefully bride the gap between the two tick wires on the top of the solenoid with a screw driver. the engine should start and should have reset the solenoid if not then you may need to get it replaced.

MY CRAFTSMAN GT5000 WILL NOT

Sounds like the switch is bad. You can test the clutch by unplugging the electrical connector then grounding the black wire to tractor or directly to the negative battery cable then the gray one to the positive touch it then the clutch should click on. The switch can be found on Sears parts direct but you will need the model number under the seat. Starts with 917 then 6 more digits.

Hope this helps, if so please vote yes. Thanks!!

there are several safety switches which are all tied into a central relay which defeats the starting and kills the running, unless they are all in the correct safe running position. a lot of craftsman mowers have that same exact let out the clutch problem and it is related to a failure in one of those parts.once you get that issue resolved, the other issue may resolve itself.

I have a Craftsman mower and the light circuit had to be replaced. It is under the flywheel on top and is a stator that the flywheel/magneto rotates inside and generates electricity. You have to be able to pull the wheel off, install a new stator and reinstall the flywheel.

How do i adjust the

there is a clutch for the drive and a clutch for the blades, would help if you specified which. Generally there are two kinds of mower clutch, one is electric and not adjustable, the other is a spring loaded pulley to put tension on the belt. When the belt stretches, the pulley splits, or the spring weakens this type of clutch may need one or all of those components replaced to restore tension, but it is not "adjustable" per se. half the time the owner has put the belt back on wrong and there is no tension so exclude that possibility before you start buying parts.

You need to have the carb cleaned or rebuilt and more than likely replace the fuel tank if you have a tank under the seat. That long fuel hose gets gummed up easily when it sits for long periods if gas is left in the tank. This is also the problem with the carb. The gas that was in the carb when it was stored dried out and gummed up the float and needle valves. The cleaner that is added to the fuel tank won't do the job, it isn't strong enough and you can't get enough to run through the carb to do any good.
