Craftsman 17.5 hp 42 in. Deck Lawn Tractor - CA Model - Page 8 Questions & Answers
What type fluid for auto trans?
Mine is a closed system and does not ever need changing so they say. I have the 20 hp Briggs and Stratton with the 42 inch deck. I would imagine it is the same engine but the CA model loses 2.5hp because of emission restrictions.
When i let the brake pedal go my egine stalls\
If shift lever is in reverse and/or you are not on the seat, this is normal. Otherwise, either the seat switch or the reverse switch may be bad. You can jump the switches temporarily to test that theory.
No forward/reverse motion
This sounds like you have a bad bearing in one of the blade hubs or idler pulleys. Check by turning each pulley by hand and see if it turns easily. Go around all the pulleys and blade hubs(where the blades mount) and check for ruff spots while turning, and that they all turn freely. Do this without the blade engaged, this will allow them to turn somewhat freely.
How are the idling pulleys located
idling pulleys = a pulley which only provides a turning place or adjusting place for belts, has no shaft attached .-- these pulleys can be under covers on deck can be stacked with more idling er pulleys, just depends on how many blades are being used
Riding mower wont fire after installing a new starter
Hi anonymous, I don't know what kind of tractor you have, but it sound like you got a wire behind the starter it's self and mashed it to a point that it is shorting to ground. If this doesn't do it and we'll check for other problems. good luck.
Where is the safety switch
Which one? There is one under the seat, another in the shifting lever and another attached to the clutch.
Blades wont disengage completely
The lever has worn out....thus it is not locking up immediately when fully disengaged. You'll need to trace down the lever right down to the blade mechanism and then you'll notice a fork shaped part that shows signs of wear....very common on craftsman riding mowers.
Sears 21 h.p. lawn tractor
Sounds like a safety interlock. Was there any electrical wires going to the deck, to the engage switch, the up down lever? There is a neutral switch that is closing or opening and the circuit is shutting down the motor.
Spark plug smells like gas
I think we're missing a lot of info. or it's posted wrong! Is it because it will not run? What else is it exhibiting for a problem? I'm assuming you may have a Kohler motor in it, is the fuel tank level dropping in it while it's sitting? Get back to us with what caused you to tell us Spark Plug smells like gas.
