My toro weedwacker starts smoking
It sounds like it is shorting out in the motor. You can lookup and buy parts at a local dealer like
www.arcolawn.com.
check what the resistance is from one plug terminal to the other with the trigger held down (unplugged)

My toro 51970a trimmer has
The carburetor needs to be removed and inspected. The malfunctions possibly indicate the need for a repair kit. I've been unable to locate your exact model, but if it has the 2-Stroke engine (gas/oil mix), then you will at the very least..need a gasket and diaghragm kit installed per inspection. There is the possibility that the carburetor needs a complete rebuild and would require the complete rebuild kit. Remove the gas lines (after draining gas). Remove the carb and inspect the screws and tightness of the screws in the 2 end covers. Are the screws tight? If not tighten them up and reinstall, trying to restart the machine. Post back if needed.
I have a 15 inch
Actual pictures of the inside wiring of these is hard to come by on the internet. Just locating a manual for this model is an extended job with limited results. Try just inspecting the trigger switch wiring and clean the contacts on the switch with some electric cleaner (available at Radio Shack). Try to do an overall inspection of the upper electrical system and look for anything unusual.
My Toro 12" Trimmer (Weed eater) needs a new screw
Your Toro electric trimmer parts are readily available through
www.partstree.com . However, to avoid having to pay $10 in shipping for a $5 part, you should try to find your local Toro dealer. They probably have the part in stock. Go to
www.toro.com and search on the dealer/distributor locator to find your closest dealer.
You will need to know the model number (5 digit) and serial number for your trimmer. These can be located on a small sticker on the trimmer.
Good luck!
After going through at least 3 string-type lawn
This can and is a frustrating problem. Some things that help are to be sure to use the right size of trimmer line. Be careful when rewinding the reel to not twist and cross the lines. I realize we should not have to give this much attention to it, but until somebody "builds a better mousetrap", we only have so much to work with.
I dont know what string
The thinner string works well in these machines and puts a lot less strain on them. I would suggest using a string of .065 range. The thicker (and more expensive) string used in the gas machines is too heavy for these lower powered electric units.
What thread is on a older toro gas straight shaft?
I like this question as it poses quite a challenge! Older Echos have the left handed threads on their crankshafts (and possibly even now)...but the shaft off the gear head would really confuse people who can't remove the head anyway if it was LH and that job in itself is a challenge also. Do you have any hardware that will thread onto it?...never seen an old Toro before! yes, 3/8 24 is a pretty standard SAE size...but certainly the Toro shaft could be close to that and some other size entirely > I hate to think in terms of metric on this.
