Try loosening or removing the fuel cap. If problem goes away, the vent or vent tube is partially blocked.If problem persists, insufficient fuel flow from the fuel tank to the carburetor. Clear the fuel line from the tank to the carburetor.May also be ignition module related... check for spark when it dies.

google your model number belt diagram

The parts diagram shows a "retainer bar" with two screws holding the breakers. It also shows screws coming through the back cover holding the front cover. You will need access to the backside of cover which may require removing the fuel tank.

Take care removing the back cover as likely there will be lose parts inside.

What you described as a resistor was a damping diode for the clutch electromagnet. The diode requires proper polarity but if connected wrong either a fuse would have blown or the diode would have opened but neither would result in fire. If the diode was left out, the hour/service meter may have been affected but not likely a fire hazard.

More likely the limb jambed the deck and the belt spun on the clutch pulley causing heat. If it wasn't shut down promptly the belt may have caught on fire.

This may sound screwy and you all think I'm probably a bit crazy but I have a Troy-Bilt 5550 generator model 01919 and it runs but surges. I also have a Troy-Bilt riding lawn mower which was doing the same thing, when I investigated it, it turned out that my gas tank on my lawn mower had those little "pincher bugs" that I got in my gas tank and was clogging the fuel outlet inside the tank I'm going to check my generator as soon as it cools down this evening as right now it's over 90° outside here in East Tennessee, and see if this is the same issue. Just thought I'd throw that out there it might be crazy talk but can't hurt to check I guess?

There may be a peg that one end ties to but without a photo, it will be difficult to guess.

Which ones? There are 2 guards around blade pulleys; outside of deck. 2 idler pulleys, going to the main drive pully off of crankshaft. If referring to the keeper on crankshaft pulley, that one is bolted to frame on right, and the left side is fitted into a hole on frame. rotate keeper until it is almost touching pulley, and insert the end of the keeper rod into that frame hole. Send pictures to clarify.

if the engine can be turned over then I would look at woodruff key that is between the crankshaft and flywheel. If engine does not turn over you have serious problems.

The engines on these tillers are usually simple single cylinder units so figuring them out isn't a problem. First pull the plug lead off the plug and hook it to one side. This is to make sure it won't startup. Next find out exactly how much oil the engine uses as too much oil can be as bad as not enough. I think the Troy Bilt uses about 12 and a half ounces. Take a good look at the engine on the tiller. Find the Dip stick/filler hole, (If fitted). Somewhere on the bottom of that area of engine, usually the lowest point, there should be a bolt head, (some have a slot in them), screwed in low down or into the bottom of the oil reservoir. If there isn't one there some models have it mounted at the base of the oil feed pipe on the side of the engine. **NOTE** Be careful removing the bolt as the old oil WILL go everywhere making an epic mess!

Check (compare) the left and right rear deck lift links. Likely one has become detached or otherwise is loose.

Lack of Lubrication. Without adequate lubrication, the gears in the transmission can become reluctant and hard to shift. Check the transmission fluid level regularly and change the fluid based on the schedule recommended in the owner's manual provided by Troy-Bilt.
