my craftsman mower shuts off every time the blades are engaged. What is the problem?
you most likely have a shorted or open safety switch. you did not mention year or model # so I can only guess what configuration you have, but typically there are the following safety switches on a riding lawn mower: clutch/brake on switch (under floorboard at clutch, this allows you to get off the tractor with engine running if brake is applied), Reverse gear safety switch (will shut engine off if attempting to go in reverse with blades on...follow the gear handle rod down to transmission, may be internal or external of differential), there is also usually a disable switch to allow blade operation in Reverse and this is usually relay operated via a button or turn of the key position, Seat safety switch (under seat and usually is disabled via engaging the clutch/brake switch, this switch will kill the motor if you come off of the seat unless brake is applied), and of course a switch that is tied in to tell when blades are engaged (engage handle or PTO switch). It is actually simpler than it sounds and you dont' need to be an electrician to figure it out. start out with a visual inspection of the switches that you can see. I would suspect the transmission position (reverse) switch first, do you have an override? if so, turn it on and see if engine stays running with blades engaged. hope this helps and here is a link to a company that deals mower parts and has alot of great parts breakdown illustrations online. A craftsman is pretty much the same as a MTD or White Outdoor model, so look those up and it will show you the areas where switches are.

The first time you turn the key, it tries to turn over then clicks. After that, nothing but clicking. We replaced the solenoid but it's still doing the same thing. We have tried to jump it but that doesn't work. The battery was checked and has a charge. The clicking is coming from the solenoid or at least in that area.
Any ideas?
Check the battery terminal connections for cleanliness and that they are free of corrosion. If the contact is corroded, this is what the clicking would be from.
The battery could be charged, but if the connection is dirty, the power won't be able to engage the solenoid properly.
Hope this helps.

My craftsman riding mower starts, runs and the mower deck seems fine but when the clutch is engaged the gears won't shift. I let out on the clutch and something up front down low smokes, it smells like a belt.
yes it is a bad belt unless it is a hydro-stat(no clutch) you need to look under the mower and see if the belt is on correctly

I have a Craftsman LT3000 (purchased in 2006) with a 20hp Briggs Intek Plus engine. I changed the oil out a few months back, and used the mower. Due to the lack of rain, the grass hasn't been growing, so I haven't been using it. Now it's the rainy season and I need to cut the grass. I tried cranking it, and it started for a few seconds and died. After hourse of trying to figure out why, I found that if you unplug the electrical connector below the carb, it will crank and run rough for a little bit while pour out white smoke. When I checked the crank case, the oil is saturated with gas. Any suggestions as to what needs to be replaced?
The float on your carb. has gotten stuck. The mower sat for a long time with fuel in it and the fuel went bad and now the carb needs cleaning. With the float stuck the gas poured through it and into the engine crankcase. Do not run your mower yet. Change the oil (be careful when draining as the oil/fuel mix will flow out of the drain like water) and with spark plug out turn motor by hand several times work the fuel out of where the oil should be. Reinstall the plug. Clean the carb, making sure that the float and needle do not stick. The connector on the bottom of the carb that you unhooked, that is a solinoid valve and you need to make sure that it is not stuck also. Now you may put gas in tank if empty, let sit for a minute to see if level in fuel tank drops. If so you did not clean the carb well enough. Double check by checking oil for fuel. Try to start. You may only want to let it run for a few seconds and check oil for gas. Determine if you want to change oil again. If you are really lucky you did not due permanent damage to your engine when you ran it before. Only time will tell. Hopefully you are familiar with how the motor sounded before this incident, because you need to listen to it while it is in use for a while to see if sounds different to indicate if you do have damage. Good Luck!
