Sounds like it could be a poor connection in the power plug or a ' dry joint ' on the power board, if it's the latter, it will respond to light thumping at the side of the tv. If that's the case it needs resoldering by a technician.. good luck !

It would have to be a "universal" remote in order to program it. Look up the model # of the remote (possibly inside battery cover) to see if it is.
