What causes a ge spacemaker above the range microwave to quit heating and makes a deeper pitched noise?

This louder, 60 cycle hum is usually caused by a bad magnetron. The unit will not heat when this happens. Repair cost can exceed $100.

NO HEAT

Most likely a bad magnetron. Not something for a do-it-yourselfer to fix. Call a repairman or buy a new microwave. Magnetron replacement will be expensive. If you need further help, I’m available over the phone at https://www.6ya.com/expert/jeffrey_634abadf963e31e5

Why does it come on by itself

HOPEFULLY this only happens when the door is closed, or else you have a very dangerous situation. If it ever turns ON with the door open, unplug it IMMEDIATELY, and do NOT plug it back in. Microwave energy will damage human tissue with very bad long-term problems... it's not something to be taken lightly. Otherwise, this sounds very much like the micro-controller in the timer/control module has had a serious failure. If this unit is more than 12 months old, it is past the manufacturers warranty period, and unless you purchased an extended warranty, it's likely beyond "financially advisable" repair. If you have a friend in the electronics repair business, it may be reasonable, but I would estimate the replacement timer/control module would cost around $85 to $100, and about $70 labor to replace it.

Touchpad doesn't work on ge model #jvm1540sn1ss

The membrane keypad has failed.

The keypad itself is not available as a separate part, so the control panel frame with keypad would have to be replaced.

This is actually a pretty simple DIY job.

You can part number WB56X10826 from the Pros here for $114.62 plus shipping (that compares to $166.50 from GE!).

You can also find helpful exploded view diagrams at that link.

At our Web site, we have a video available showing how to remove a typical over the range control panel assembly in under 5 minutes.

Then disconnect your keypad strip as shown in the photo below, then remove the screws that hold your circuit board in the old frame.

Then carefully (since the display is made of glass) move your circuit board to the new frame, and reassembly is the reverse of disassembly.
