My Lacie external drive clicks but won't spin up.

Your harddrive is bad, the motor bearing that spins your cylinder heads is damaged, even though the harddrive hasn't been dropped, or removed, this is a result of faulty and cheap product. Theres nothing you can do to replace the motor bearing, you will need to just get a new harddrive and install into the external hd enclosure or get a new external drive. If you decide you want to recover your files, you will need to take this harddrive out and maybe take it to bestbuy/ office depot where they will have to send your harddrive out to a data recovery center. They might be able to recover some data, or all, or none. It is a pricey move to take this step.

How to recover data from dead sata hard drive

Two things die on most hard drives, The really serious one is that the spindle motor coil opens up and you have a dead motor. But, most of the issues with hard drives ends up being the controller board dying. Look at the model number of your drive and see if you can find a good used one on Ebay that has the exact same model number. They have to match! After getting the same drive usually at a bargain price you then swap the controller boards and they try out your drive. Almost 100% success for me as I have done this many times for friends, family and others who had a drive that died for no reason. Now, if you have dropped your drive then kiss it good bye as the head structure will be totally destroyed! I have taken those apart and removed the platters and put them into a matching drive, this is not for the novice user to do. but its is worth the try if the data is very important. good luck

If the hard drive(s) have been clicking for a long time, and rebooting randomly for some time, I'm leaning toward the drive(s) being dead. You'll need to do a data recovery on the drive or restore from backup. You should get a new hard drive. Clicking is bad.

Constantly getting write data to media errors

If you're using the MS Backup utility, it's creating .BKF files which are very large (1-2GB+). Your external hard drive uses a FAT32 file system, which has a limitation of 4GB per file. If your backup files are over 4GB, it won't copy. It probably worked on your 250GB hard drive because it was formated with NTFS and not FAT32. You'll need to limit the size of your backup files to 4GB or less, or use a different utility that has file-size splitting options.

There is no way to retrieve the data, however there are specialty labs out there that can access information in the majority of cases, but be aware that it will be expensive.
