Recorder LG - RH361SE (HDD failed) Can I replace HDD?

The hard disks inside the recorder should be exchangable. If you still have warranty, bring the machine to your point of purchase, or repair shop, as directed by the shop you got it from.

As you are at it, consider asking to change to a bigger size HD, and pay a little for the prize difference?

If out of warranty, try changing the disk. These machines should be easy to open, as long as you do not have the electrical cord plugged in and do not touch capacitors that might hold remaining charge.

However, although the disks are mostly standard IDE disks, there might be a software specific to this brand of recorder on the old hard disk, so pls find out if there is downloadable boot images existing that you could transfer.

You might even have a corrupted boot image... and not a broken disk.

Here is a discussion thread with pros and cons about changing the disk:

Disk recording and playback stopped working

Generally this means that there is either an internal issue going on, or that the laser has become dirty or has defected. Try bying a simple DVD cleaner disk and running that through a few times. If that does not work the product may be defective -- in which case I hope that you still have a warranty -- and if you do return the product promptly for a new one.

what you need to do is open the unit carefully remove the dvd loader, open it and gently clean the laser with a clean cotton tip, if that doesnt fix the problem you need to replace the units dvd loader. part number found on white or yellow sticker on dvd loader. hope this helps.

Dvd drive cannot read cds and vcds but can read dvds only

I had the inverse problem on my unit - 7 months after I bought it brand new it wouldn't read DVD's, but would read CD's no problem -- I bought a replacement loader from LG, swopped them out myself and now works 100%.

Turned out the laser for reading DVD's had gone - they use different lasers or wavelengths or something... :)

When i put a dvd

the problems you have mentioned have always been solved by replaceing the MPEG printed circuit board and the dvd loader. part numbers for these parts can be found on the parts inside the unit. all barnds are the same, they will all break down, get the longest warranty and if u are wishing to keep it for 5+ years take an extended warranty, so many times i have opened a sony tv with lg parts inside or a panasonic with samsung parts inside. hope this helps.
