No phono input

You will need a pre-amp with a RIAA curve. This is vital as the output from a vinyl disc is nothing remotely like flat. It is also at a very low level and will need to be boosted to go into your receiver. RIAA pre-amps are widely available and you get what you pay for. Once you have bought one you should be able to plug its output into the aux on your receiver.

No sound from the speakers

check your connections if they are good another problem I could see possibly happening was if the wires for the speakers were plugged into the amp while it was turned on the wires may have touched together and blew the side out of your amplifier.

Connecting sonly bravia tv to old sony receiver

Does the tv have an optical output jack? If so, that is probably the easiest way.

Sony STR-DG510 hook up with BDP-S560 no sound

The Sony manual for this receiver is not wrong, it is just a little misleading.
It does in fact use HDMI but ONLY for the HIGH DEFINITION video portion of the signal, as output from the receiver to your television. High Definition Multimedia interface carries both audio and video, however, your receiver is not decoding the high definition AUDIO portion of it and passing it through the HDMI, nor is it passing any form of multichannel audio through HDMI. So you can see why the receiver is no longer available for sale from the Sony website. The HDMI connection on your receiver is redundant unless you are not using a multichannel audio format, in which case you would be using either the TV speakers or connect an additional audio cable from the TV's "audio out" back into the receiver for external speakers.
All that should be done is use the HDMI cable from your blu-ray player connected directly to your TV. That will give you your picture, and possibly a better one since the receiver will no longer be in the signal path.
Then connect either a coaxial or optical cable from the blu ray player to the receiver for your audio. You will then be able to have Dolby Digital and DTS surround formats.
Your service person was wrong.

How do I switch from coax to hdmi on my Sony receiver?

on the sony site it says the hdmi into the reciever is for the video, relayed by another hdmi to the tv, the audio will still be the coax I personally would use the hdmi from dvd directly to the tv, and the coax from dvd directly to the reciever and call it a day

It goes into protect mode then shuts off. its not the fuse and i have unpluged all speakers and it still goes to protect mode then shuts off.

I had the same issue - I found that there is a square chip, about an inch and a half from the amplifier chips and heat sink, which got so hot (i could not even touch it), it was seperating one of its pins from the circuit board (due to a hairline crack on the pin itself. When it got that hot, ther metal pin seperated at the crack which made this chip short out, creating the "protect" to happen. I resoldered the solder joints on the circuit board where the pins of this chip connected and fixed the cracked pin with a jumper strand of wire, then made an aluminum heat sink and connected it directly to the chip -no more issues!
