Kenmore Elite Bottom freezer is

Hello, ok lets start with the ice and frost all over the freezer compartment. This is mainly due to your unit haveing a defrost issue. If you were to remove the rear panel on the inside rear of the freezer by unscrewing the screws that hold in the panel you would then gain access to the evaporator coil. There are three key parts that make the defrost function work properly the defrost thermostat, the defrost heater, and the defrost timer or on some units instead of a defrost timer they have a control board located behind a panel in the rear of the machine. The defrost thermostat is usually the first place you would start diagnosing your defrost issue. Also when you remove the rear panel and gain access to the evaporator coil if you found any ice build up on the evaporator you would then defrost any ice with a hair dryer and also assure that the drain hole below the evaporator is clear of ice as well as any obstruction as well. The defrost thermostat is a small round disc like part that has two wires going to usually found on one of the compressor copper lines, the defrost heater is the element looking metal piece that is usually found below the evaporator coil itself. Both of these pieces can be tested for continuity using a multimeter to assure if they are functioning properly. Most of the time it is thhe defrost thermostat that fails that does cause this issue. So first test these two key parts and message me back with your finds. If both of these parts test as working properly I will then further instruct on how to test the remaining parts. Thanks again I look forward to your reply

Kenmore elite bottom freezer, refrigerator is

Hi,

Thank you for contacting fixya.com.

Check the condenser under the refrigerator is clogged with lint. Make sure that the condenser fan underneath the fridge is running properly. You can get to it through the back. Check the coils on the rear of the refrigerator and make sure they are clean and dust free. Also check the back wall or floor of the freezer section for frost. Check the evaporator fan to see if it is running. Check the condenser coils under the unit for blockage from dust. Check the condenser fan under the unit to see if it is running. If you have frost in the freezer there is a problem with the defrost system and the freezer will start to warm eventually as well as the fresh food section. If that is the problem you can check the defrost thermostat, defrost heater/s, and the defrost timer or adaptive defrost control If used on your unit or the main control board if so equipped. Also check the freezer to ensure it isn't over loaded with food stuff, reason being air must flow freely threw out the entire refrigerator in order for the thermostat to work correctly.

Defrost the freezer by disconnecting the power to the refrigerator and letting it sit for at least 24 hours with both the doors open to allow the frost to melt completely but it will build up again in 1-2 weeks and start the warming up again.

Your post does not state if it is the freezer or refrigerator.
Please confirm which one.
For now I will assume that it is the freezer.
Look on the very bottom of the inside of the freezer, under the bottom drawer/basket.
Is there evidence of ice build up?
Look down the entire back panel for water running down,it may look as if a waterfall has frozen.
Look at the ice tray....are the cubes as high as the tray's top?
Look in the ice bucket, are the cubes stuck together?
Is there water frozen on the bottom of the ice maker?

Please post results
Thanks....

Poor cooling is often the result of a heavy frost build-up on the evaporator coils. You can't see these coils without removing a panel on the inside of your freezer. A sure sign that there is a build-up is the presence of any frost or ice build-up on the inside walls, floor, or ceiling of the freezer. Such a frost build-up usually indicates a problem in the self-defrosting system or damaged door gaskets. The refrigerator is supposed to self-defrost approximately four times in every 24 hour period. If one of the components in the self-defrosting system fails, the refrigerator continues to try to cool. Eventually, though, so much frost builds up on the evaporator coils that the circulating fan can't draw air over the coils. There may still be a small amount of cooling because the coils are icy, but with no air flow over the coils, cooling in the refrigerator compartment is quite limited. Here's an inexpensive, though inconvenient, way to determine if the problem is with the self-defrosting system. Remove all of the perishable food from the refrigerator and freezer, turn the thermostat in the refrigerator to Off, and leave the doors open for 24 to 48 hours. (Be sure to have several towels ready in case the melting frost and ice causes the drip pan to overflow). This allows the refrigerator to defrost "manually." When the frost and ice build-up has completely melted away, turn the thermostat back to a normal setting. If the refrigerator then cools properly, it indicates a problem with one of three components in the self-defrosting system:The defrost timerThe defrost thermostat (also called the bi-metal switch)The defrost heaterIf it still does not cool properly, there may be a problem with the refrigerant level or the compressor. You may need to consult with a qualified appliance repair technician to further diagnose the problemSelf-defrosting refrigerators all have a set of coils and a cooling fan, usually under the refrigerator, that need to be cleaned regularly. If these coils get coated with dust, dirt or lint, the refrigerator may not cool properly. The coils may appear to be a thin, black, wide radiator-like device behind the lower kick-panel. To clean them, disconnect the refrigerator from the power source, use a refrigerator condenser brush and your vacuum cleaner to clean the coils of any lint, pet hair, etc. You may not be able to get to all of the condenser from the front, it may be necessary to clean the remainder of the condenser from the rear of the refrigerator.

Our ice maker makes hollow ice cubes. Why?

Your icemaker is not getting enough water to adequatly fill the tray. Before you adjust it, check the status of the refrigerator's waterfilter. If it's old and clogged replace. Next, wait for the tray to fill, and check the level water before it has a chance to freeze. (or take the frozen tray out and allow to thaw). The tray should be about 75% or more full of water. If not, there is an adjustment that can be made to extend the amount of time the solenoid stays open (which means more time for the water to fill the trays). Good luck!

Is it forming ice or frost? It sounds like an automatic defrost problem. If the freezer frosts up it won't circulate enough air up to the fresh food compartment. Try defrosting it manually for 24 hours by shutting it down and leaving the freezer door open. Afterwards, if it resumes normal operation I would bet that there is something faulty in the defrost circuit, i.e., defrost heater not working or defrost control.
