Notice that the eyepiece is in the FRONT side of the scope. Take the front lens cap off-- the primary mirror is on the BOTTOM of the tube.

Your weight is probably off balance which is why it won't stay on the tripod. If your not seeing any images your scope needs to be collimated. I going to straight forward on this answer. This telescope is a useless piece of junk! The tripod is unstable, the .965 (obsolete size and design) eyepieces will only focus dead center. The finder is useless, too narrow a field to find anything. The high power eyepiece exceeds the maximum useful magnification (only 98x max under perfect conditions) This may be used for terrestrial viewing but worthless for astronomy.

Astronomical telescopes always show the view upside down. Erect image accessories are available for terrestrial viewing if desired but reduces contrast in astronomical applications.

You will not find a manual for these small telescopes.

This is a small refractor telescope-- they pretty much all work the same-- BUT don't expect to get more than 100 power out of the scope. Yes I know the box said 600 power but it's a lie. In my 8 inch telescope I rarely get above 250 power and my scope is many times larger than the one you have--

Now put the eyepiece with the largest number written on it into the telescope-- the LARGER the number the LOWER the magnification. During the day time practice focusing on a distant object --- AND line-up the small finder scope on top with the main telescope tube. Look at the top of a distant light or church steeple, or telephone pole. Without moving the telescope adjust the small finder scope by loosening and tightening the screws around the tube holding the finder scope-- put the crosshairs on the same spot as the main telescope.

Now you can use the small finder to locate objects in the sky-- the moon should be your first night time target.

You never said WHAT Vivitar scope you bought?? Anyway, let's assume it is a refractor like the picture you posted.

Put the diagonal into the rear of the scope -- into the focuser, and tighten the set screws.

Then put the eyepiece with the LARGEST number written on it into the diagonal. Take the scope outside and turn the focusing knob in and or out until you get a sharp image of a distant object.

Turn the knob slowly until it comes to focus.

This sounds like a reflector style scope with mirrors-

Put the eyepiece with the largest number written on it into the focuser--- do NOT use the 2 x barlow if you have one. Take the scope outside during the day time and practice focusing on a distant object. The end with the focuser on the side is the UP END of the telescope.

We see many beginners with these types of scopes mounted backwards pointing at the ground.
