Won't boot up. makes funny noise for about 1 sec.

Your hard drive has died a gory death. The noise is probably a failed spindle bearing. I have seen it suggested that putting the drive in the freezer for a few hours, then hooking it up and powering up sometimes works to get the drive going long enough to recover the data. However, I would not put my hopes on this. If you do not have a backup of your data (you have done backups, right?), then the data is lost unless you want to pay several hundred dollars to have a data recovery company try to recover your data from the platters. It depends on how important the data is. Sorry you are having this problem, it can be very frustrating.

I have a SimpleTech 500GB external hard drive

Most USB devices do not work when connected to a computer as the computer boots up (unless the BIOS allows this function).
Boot up the computer first and then insert the USB device/hard drive.

If you need to remove a USB device when the computer is running then click on Safely Remove Hardware - click on that device and ONLY REMOVE the device when advised to do so. Failure to do this will eventually cause the device to fail.

My system is not seeing the SimpleTech HD after i

If you are running Vista, try these steps:

Connect the drive but do not Format the drive, right click 'my computer' then 'manage' go to 'storage/disk management' view the drives; your usb drive will not be allocated a drive letter. You can set one manually or leave it for about 2~5 minutes for one to be allocated auto. Each time you connect the drive you may have to do this.

-----------------------------

If you weren't planning to reinstall an operating system from CD and then restore your data files, then what software did you use to "back up your system?" Did you clone the parition, or did you try to just copy all the files?

If the vista disk management solution didn't help, please repost with more information.

I wiped my entire external hard drive....now it

Yes you can if its electrically OK

Start, Control Panel, Administrative Services, Computer Management, Disk Management.
it should be listed in there and you can use that panel to format etc.
Make sure you let it have a drive letter.

Also a few USB tips below.

I devised these simple steps that tend to remedy quite a few issues with most USB portable / external hard drives and devices (though not always)

A few things to check but assumes USB and Windows for other interfaces / operating systems similar steps may be adapted to suit.

1. Ensure it is connected directly to the computer to a USB 2.0 port not a USB 1.0 port as this can have effects on performance and reliability

2. Use only the cables that came with it NOT one that fits that may have been lying around or is longer. Not all USB cables are equal even though they should be)

3. Do not connect through an external USB HUB unless that hub is USB 2.0 AND has its own power supply.

4. Use ONLY the power supply that came with it if it has an external power supply Don’t use any other unless you know it has both the same voltage and current rating e.g. 12V 500mA anything rated below that would not work properly.

5. Always use the same port for connecting your devices. Some devices do not like being switched about. If switched they may want to install software / drivers again. This can be especially true if you move a HUB to another port

If you checked and fixed anything there and still have issues then check your hardware from CONTROL PANEL / SYSTEM / HARDWARE.

Any exclamation marks by hardware need fixing before you investigate any further

Have scheculed backup each monday at 5AM, but it

There could be any number of reasons.

If th computer to be backed up is off, sleeping, hibernating then your backup application needs to be able to deal with that.

If you are doing it over a lan you should check that WOL is enabled (Wake On Lan)

If its a laptop then these have TWO sets of power settings on is for battery use and may well shut down, put to sleep, or hibernate your computer. Backing up on battery power is never recommended.

Even if its a laptop and on a power outlet then the power setting for the computer may still be set to do the things mentioned.

And even if it is a regular desktop type computer these too have setting for power and may even have a setting to shut down the hard drive if it has been idle too long..

To check these features go to Control panel, then select Power Options.

You will see any boxes that need to be changed if you read the function.

Also some hardware has power saving features all of their own and these can be found by going to the control panel, system, hardware, device manager, and then going through the individual properties for each piece of hardware.

In your case and esp if your back is to lan or a usb drive then check those hardware items first for any energy saving features that need to be turned off.

Hard drive is not recognized by my computer.

Hi,

This generally means you have a hardware failure in the drive or enclosure. The simplest way to test which is to have a hardware tech move the drive into a new enclosure and see if it works.

This will void your warranty if you do it, so, if the drive is under warranty and there are no files you consider valuable on the drive, call the manufacturer for warranty support.

If you value the data more than the drive is worth then take it to your local hardware vendor and ask them to test the hard drive in a new enclosure. Good odds it will work this way but if not you may need the help of a data recovery specialist.

In North America I use Armor-IT, if you are in a different region and the new enclosure fails to garner results, comment back with your region(Country, State, City) and I will supply you with the closest reputable facility.

My simpletech portable 250 gb hard drive wont read

Hello my  friend, regarding on your problem we have to consider first the different possibilities that cause this hard drives won't work. First try to double check the connector if it is properly connected or the power cable connector that causes no power that eventually give no power to the hard-drive. Another if you can notice the hard-drive, if the power of that device if present then eventually the problem is your hard-drive but if doesn't have a power then their are possibility that the power supply is  wrong. My recommendation, if you could fine a technician in your place then better you have to seek assistance in order to help you save your files from lossing it and to check if what are the main reason why this device won't work properly even you tried different computers. In that way, you can save files. Or if that device is under warranty then ship it back to the supplier to have a replacement but make sure that they have to make a back up from all of your data.
Hope this advice helps you from your problem. If you need more assistance just reply to this post. Thanks

Simple tech 500 gb external hard drive

It is not necessarily the hard drive itself that has failed. More likely it is the enclosure and the hardware within in that enables you to access the device. The only way to know for sure, is to connect the hard drive inside your PC and see if you can access it. If it accesses fine when inside your PC, you should be able to buy a new enclosure for your drive and be back up and running with very little effort. If the drive cannot be accessed when hooked up inside your PC, it is unfortunately dead.

Good luck

My Employer Says They Are Going To Cut My Wages. Can They?

If you are in the middle of a contract, then cutting your wages is almost certainly a violation of your employment law rights. While I am by no means an expert on this matter, I did have a similar issue years ago - mid-contract wage cuts - and I hired anemployment attorney to fight the case on my behalf. It turned out that my employer was basically looking to scare people into taking the wage cut. They got into some pretty serious legal trouble for their transgression, and nothing happened to me in terms of wage cuts after that. If you are between contracts, your employer can re-negotiate your salary, but as far as I am aware, if you are in an agreed-upon contract, they cannot just decide to reduce your salary. If you want to settle matters, contest this action with support from a legal professional.
