3 small black bar appear on the screen. they are

Hello,
All Plasma and LCD TV have boards that control vertical and horizontal output to their respective areas. They are connected to the screen by ribbon cables. If one of these boards fails all together, has a failed chip, a bad connection, or a bad ground somewhere it will result in a black line in the area of that board. A bad ribbon cable connection on the bottom will result in a vertical black bar though the screen. Many times reseating the connection will fix it, if the ribbon cable has been nicked there could be a severed connection. They an sometimes be fixed, but it is a pain. An yes I have done it, but the bar is gone. The same will happen if the chip that outputs to that area opens. The connectors are the first place to look paying close attention to the cable, they are extremely delicate so great care must be taken if you decide to tinker with em, the usually have lift locks that release them, but it is very easy to rectify.
Good luck in solving the problem...

Standby flashes 3 times pauses and flashes again.

Hi,
The Standby/Power light of the TV blinks when there is any internal malfunction in the TV. The self-diagnostic function of the TV will cause the STANDBY light to blink or flash when the television detects an issue. The number of times the STANDBY light flashes corresponds to a specific issue.
Few examples are given below; some of the issues may be resolved without the need for service.
1 blink / 2 blinks / 5 blinks: - This indicates that there may be a power-related problem with your set.
3 blinks: - This indicates that there may be a power-related problem with your set. The set will need to be serviced to allow a technician to determine the specific issue that needs to be repaired. If the power light flashes three times in sequence in a Lamp TV, the lamp cover is not securely attached. Reattach the lamp cover to resolve this issue.
4 blinks: - This indicates that there may be a back light or lamp power problem.
6 blinks: - This indicates that there is some kind of audio problem with your set.
7 blinks: - This indicates that there is a temperature problem with your set. Please check to make sure that the air vents on the sides and back of the set are not blocked or clogged and there is adequate ventilation around the television. We recommend that you check and clean the vents periodically to make sure the set receives adequate air flow. If the problem continues, the set will need to be serviced.
8 blinks: - This indicates that there may be a video-related problem with your set. If the flash sequence is not listed above or the light continues to flash, follow the steps below to perform a power reset:
Try the following steps to check if the issue can be resolved.
Turn off the television.
Unplug the television power cord from the electrical outlet.
Let the television remain without power for 60 seconds.
Plug the power cord back into the electrical outlet.

If the television is plugged into a power strip or surge protector, remove it from the power strip or surge protector and plug it directly into the wall outlet. If the issue is resolved, the problem is with the power strip or surge protector and not the television.
If the issue continues to occur, service may be required.

Thanks for using Fixya.

I have a Bravia KDL-52w4500.

unfortunatly, horizontal lines on an lcd tv, almost always mean a bad lcd panel. if it is out of warranty, it will be really cost prohibitive to replace the panel. if the set is only a year old or so call sony customer support and ask for a concession for the part.

You need to toggle through the inputs on the television. Look at your Sony remote, to the top right of the directional keypad, is an "input" button. Turn your DVD playervon, and then press that input button until you see something on your tv screen.

There is bad news on this. The vertical lines mean the LCD panel is bad. You might get lucky and it is the Tcon board but there is an issue with these LCD's and Sony is aware of it and have extended thier warranty on certain models. You need to contact Sony support for details. Here is a link but it is refering to the 46" model.
http://esupport.sony.com/US/perl/news-item.pl?news_id=378&mdl=KDL46XBR4
There is also the email support if you have trouble with them on this, it is http://[email protected]
I would advise you to contact your local dealer first and discuss this with them and see if they are willing to help, if not go straight to the manufacture as listed above. Don't have any work done on this till you recieve word from Sony on the problem. If it is new enough they will replace the display and repair the set for free or a reduced cost.

I have a Sony Bravia 40" which does not always

This is a common fault as the set on ageing deteriorates in the connections. There is a high possibility that the components over a period of heating and cooling, tend to bring on a problem of dry soldering. So my advice is to check the set for some loose joints that have played on to give you these erratic shut downs or poor performance.

The best way to check for loose connections is to tap lightly when the set is powered on , If there is change while tapping then it seems that there are DRY solder joints. Remove main plug, the covers - with caution of high voltage, check for dry joints, use a good soldering iron to solder all suspected points.

Sometimes the fault occurs when the set warms up, if so you can simulate the heat using a hair dryer on the suspected areas, try with the power supply, distribution, Processor controller, driver controllers on the A/V related sections. Also the use a FREEZE-IT spray can simulate the components to cool and show up the fault.

Based on the above method you must be able to locate the area of fault and solder the sections. Sometimes large IC's- ones with more pins- tend to have drying in some pins and so cause faults related to the IC's protocol. Have a rough idea of looking into the areas to reduce the time of probing.

I have coloured vertical lines covering my Sony

I also have a 2 yr old Sony KDL32xbr4 that now has multi-colored vertical lines on the screen. I contacted Sony and they say they have "no known issue" of this sort for this model. I find this rather puzzling since I have found numerous postings on the web. They told me to try the factory reset. Whatever. Might as well have said "don't buy a Sony". 2 years! $1300 for a tv and it lasts 2 years! Makes me sick to my stomach.
