Have you tried to install modern OS and run windows 98 in virtualbox or vmware? Virtualbox is software that is able to emulate os. This is only emulation and every function of os is not available, but core functionality is reserved, like running different apps.
My Motherboard: ASUS A7V8X turns
check all leads from motherboard to hard drive including electrical and all of your cd/dvd drives make sure the connections are good and not faulty and there is no dust built up on them
make sure your computers ram modules are securely seated with no dust in the sockets also the Cmos battery has charge and seated with no dust in the sockets
could be a memory dump you might be running to many programs at the one time placing to much strain on the CPU you might not have enough RAM random access memory
or to find out what the problem is
restart your computer repeatedly tapping the f8 key to enter safe mode while the screen is black once in safe mode where the only things working will be your keyboard and mouse allowing you to attempt to repair your computer you could select the option start at last known configuration that worked this will tell you if and what file has been corrupted or missing then you will know if its a hardware issue

I installed an xfx geforce
try uninstalling a few unnecessary programs then click start run type cmd then type chkdsk/r/f which will scan for and attempt to fix any bad sectors and automatically fix any corrupt files on your hard drive this will schedule on a restart then defragment your hard drive or click start control panel administrive tools,computer management ,disk management right click on your drive select properties click tools you should see click check now click start tick in both boxes automatically fix files and scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors place then a tick in both boxes then select check now,start should schedule this task when restart
do not do anything while the chkdsk utility is in progress any input may damage your computer
hen you should test or replace all leads make sure they are securely seated and are not bad/faulty that are attached to your (((motherboard to your hard drive)))
then click start all programs accessories system tools defragment your hard drive
you might have to install more RAM random access memory
scroll to the bottom toolbar (bottom of screen) right click you can select task manager applications also processes you will see whats running on your computer if you see something running that you don't need running select end now then you might uninstall that particular program you might have virus slowing your computer also select users you will see who is using your computer
if your computer came with a motherboard disc the drivers could be on it or you could download
cnetdownload.com on the home page you should see the download software finder under that there will be a list platform, category sub category price from the category drop down list select drivers then from the price drop down list select free or which ever applies to your need

Probably the battery. Easiest way to check is first disconnect from internet, then check date in xp, if says year 2000, your bios has been reset to default, probably from dead battery. Check by unplugging computer and pressing power button 2 or 3 times, then remove button battery and move pins to clear cmos, after 10 seconds, replacd pins and reinstall battery. Bios should then boot to default settings. In General tab, set correct date. If xp still shows incorrect date, you have a dead battery.

On my motherboard a7v8x -
if your computer came with a motherboard disc the sound drivers could be on it
you might have to uninstall then reinstall both the sound drivers and the sound card make sure you have both of these devices backed up to a disc before uninstalling
a yellow? question mark means you need to install/update driver to do this
right click to install driver also
click start control panel administrive tools computer management device manager scroll to sound,video and game controllers you might see a yellow question mark? Right click to reinstall drivers
click start control panel sounds and audio,volume,advanced,speakers select appropriate speakers also audio you will find 3 drop down lists make sure you have made the correct adjustments there
click start control panel sounds and audio devices you can adjust the volume there also select speaker volume you can make adjustments there you can also tick in the box place icon in taskbar

In General download tab,
Select Product - Motherboard
Select Series - SocketA(462)
Select Model - a78x-x
then click Search
a popup window will appear then select winXP as operating system and click Search
click the + icon before the Manual category to expand selections of manual languages.
choose
Version E1198 and click on Global. enter code and click Submit to start the download. Select where to save the manual i prefer My Documents.
Boot sequence ok , xp pro starts ok and crash
Hello,
Please restart the computer and repeatedly tap the F8 key (you need to press F8 before windows starts to load)
A menu should appear. Select Safe Mode and press Enter
Let me know if it able to start in safe mode
