Hi Don,Remove the Black cartridge and Clean the electrical contacts ( golden contacts ) with lint free cloth.Turn off/on the printer and install the Cartridge. If this does not work, On the Front panel, Press Setup button >> Tools >> Clean Printhead/Cartridge - Press OKThis should fix the issue.If the above steps did not fix, Replace the cartridge if its very old and has not been used for long time as it could be depleted. Try calling HP on 1-800-474-6836 If this is Genuine Cartridge recently purchased and it does not print in black.Regards,Sean

This type of fatal cartridge error (i.e. "refer to documentation" / "incompatible cartridges", etc.) typically indicates the internal micro-electronics of the HP #74/75 cartridge are damaged. The cartridge's electrical wire runs at rear and lower side of the ink cartridge, are very delicate and are somewhat susceptible to ink attack over time, which can lead to premature failures. However, our test group has also seen these failures with brand new cartridges. In addition, the older the cartridge the higher the chance of an internal electrical failure. I suggest you first run a 'Tap 41' diagnostic test to check cartridges electrical health (this is a forced test); you may also bypass the error (temporarily) on most models which use HP 74/75 cartridges. Refer to Inkjet411 youtube videos below on how to access respective printer's service menu and correct:

hi i dont have the tricolor cartridge in my hp 5610 and i want to work only with black cartridge and my printer says there is no cartridge on the left , is it posible to solve this problem and work with one cartridge only ? i can print but copy and fax doesnt work . thanx

Well, since you didn't supply your printer model, I can only suggest you start by watching this. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KEkCP2jCUVcThen go to inkjet411.com, locate your ink cartridge # and printer model - run the 'Tap 41' diagnostics and try bypassing the error message by access the service menus (we have instructional videos for most HP printer models). Try to reset the printer:

Unplug the printer from power

Hold the # and 9 together while plugging it back

If still not working try again with a # and 3 combination
