Control lights are on.
Hello,
If
your dryer won't start, you can troubleshoot the problem to determine
whether you need to hire a repairman. Some repairs can be done without
help, while others are trickier and may require a professional. Start
with the most obvious possible causes and work your way up.
Check the power
-
First make sure the dryer is plugged securely into the wall, not via an
extension cord. Check your circuit breaker panel or fuse box to make
sure the off switch hasn't been triggered or a fuse hasn't blown. If
there is a wall switch that controls power to the outlet, make sure
it's on. Next, unplug the dryer and plug in something else to verify
that the outlet is receiving power. If the power is on and working,
test the dryer components.
Possible reasons your dryer won't start -- from the front
-
For most of these tests, you will need to know how to use an ohmmeter
to check continuity. Leave the dryer unplugged while testing, and label
each wire so you'll be able to put it back together properly.
Test the door latch. If it won't catch, that could be the answer. If the door closes securely, check the door switch next.
The
door switch turns the dryer off when the door is open. If it's not
working, your dryer won't start. It will be located in the front panel
near the door opening. Remove it and test with the ohmmeter. If it's
good, replace it and move on.
The start switch is another common
reason dryers won't start. Remove the screws at either end of the
control panel and flip it forward. You may have to remove the endcaps
first. Remove the start switch and test with the ohmmeter. If the
switch is good, put it back together and move to the back of the dryer.
Possible reasons your dryer won't start -- from the back
-
Remove the back panel from the dryer and set aside. Each model is
different, so check with the manufacturer to determine how to open
yours.
Once
you have the panel open, the first thing to check is the thermal fuse.
This is a small unit attached to the exhaust duct of most dryers that
is designed to blow if the dryer overheats. Test the wires using the
ohmmeter. If the thermal fuse is blown, you should also consider
replacing the thermostat.
The thermostat will be attached to the
ventilation system. Remove it and test the wires with the ohmmeter. If
it's good, it's time to call a repairman.
Complicated problems
-
Dryer timers rarely malfunction, and this is where testing gets tricky.
The timer may be located in the front panel or in the back, and is part
of a timing assembly. While it is possible to disassemble the
components, test and replace the timer motor, it's better to call a
repairman.
The motor is the most costly part of the dryer. If the motor is burned out, the repair can cost several hundred dollars.
DIY or call a professional?
-
Most dryer components are inexpensive, and repair is uncomplicated. If
you're comfortable with doing electrical repairs, there's no reason not
to do most repairs yourself, and there are plenty of tutorials online.
But the motors are part of assemblies, making repair more difficult
and, in some cases, more physically challenging. For a motor repair,
unless you're experienced, get professional help.
Hope this help?.
Good luck and thanks for using fixya.

My Maytag Neptune dryer selector switch only sets
Hi and welcome to FixYa, I am Kelly. Before you even do any troubleshooting go to the main breaker panel and turn the circuit breaker OFF. Physically push it to OFF to reset the breaker then cycle it to ON. Then test for heat. Sometimes just one breaker will trip and the motor will run but there will be no heat.
I am trying to decipher your posted question: Are you saying the cycle temp button is stuck or... that when any heat cycle is physically selected you have no heat?
To do any of the following steps the dryer must be unplugged or the main circuit breaker turned OFF.
Having said that. The heating element should read continuity across the terminals and NOT to the chassis from either terminal. If it reads to the chassis the heating element is broken / shorted. Resistance of a good heating element will be 7 - 11.8 Ohms. Power for the element is from L2 of the terminal block (far right terminal) / RED wire to 2M of the motor switch. With the motor running power from L2 is passed vial motor switch terminal 1M (red wire) to the heating element then back through all of the thermostats via the red white wire.
1. High Limit thermostat. Red and white from the heating element. Then RED wire on to the
2. Cycle thermostat 150 or 155 deg F 2nd terminal of cycle thermostat.. is Red and white and connects to the NON-reset-able Thermal Fuse.
3. Thermal fuse red white in and Red OUT. The red out connects to the RED wire of timer switch (2)
ALL of the above are required for the heating element to heat.
Each of the thermostats should read continuity at room temp.
Additionally the high limit thermostat that must also read continuity at room temperature.
Look at all of the terminals of all of the thermostats. This is where loose connections often cause terminals to melt or wires to burn.
One other thing that can cause no heat is the centrifugal motor switch. If it does not internally cycle at speed or has failed the dryer will not heat.
Lastly look at the Dryer Pigtail (Cord) where it connected to the terminals of the terminal block. Sometimes a loose connection on the power cord causes the terminals to heat up and a wire to burn at the terminal block.
Some where in the dryer there is a Tech sheet in a 3 x 5 or 4 x 5 envelope. (either taped to the cabinet or inside the top panel) It should have wiring data in the envelope. There may also be a diagnostics procedure you can initiate and read the codes for a failed component.
Lets not forget the dangers of working on live circuits if your reading power. All of the tests I asked you to perform were continuity checks. I did describe the power flow... I do not recommend reading for power if you are not comfortable working on live circuits. What ever you do... do NOT work on
live circuits alone.
Thanks for choosing FixYa.

Dryer wont heat vent clear
Unplug the dryer and the first thing to do is check for the presence of
220 volts at the wall outlet. If you lost one leg of the 220 volts, it
is possible for your dryer to run but there will not be any heat. Once
you verified there is definitely 220 volts at the wall outlet, remove
the rear cover. On the lower right hand side you will see a silver
canister which contains the heating element. Remove the lower two wires
directly from the heating element and check this for continuity. If it
is good, on the left hand side of the same canister they often install a
thermal safety which may have tripped. Do the same test as with the
heating element. Remove the wires and test the thermal safety for
continuity. If this is good, move to the blower housing on the left
side of the exhaust vent and look for a white piece of plastic which has
two wires on it. Remove these two wires and check this item for
continuity.
