MP830 Canon Faxing problem
Display the fax menu and then select Print Report\List and print the Users Data List. Check the setting of the ECM TX setting. If this is ON turn it OFF. This is the Error Correction Mode setting, probability is the fax you are sending to is not ECM compatible. The MP830 is suppose to automatically send in standard mode if receiving machine is not ECM compatible however I am not sure how well this works. Turn the ECM setting off by displaying the Fax Menu and then select Maintenance\Settings, Device Settings, Fax Settings, TX settings, ECM TX.
Print head
I encounter exact same problem. What I did was took out the print head and clean the print head with Qtips with alcohol. To locate and remove print head, follow the instruction at Canon's PIXMA MP830 website and choose the tab
"Support & Service" type "rseating the Print Head"
You'll be seeing
http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=ModelInfoAct&fcategoryid=123&modelid=12804#SupportDetailAct
Basically, printer head is inner carton where ink cartridges sit.
Above link shows pricicely how to remove the ink cartridge.
Above link's instruction says, Caution: do not touch print head nozzles<1>
But, I just went ahead and clean the print head nozzles with rubbing alcohol soaked Qtips.
After completely cleaned and dried, I reinstalled print head, reinstalled ink cartridges,
closed all the cover. It went back working perfectly.
Error - Paper Output Slot
Same problem with my mp600. Turns out I had a black twisty-tie in it. Must have fallen in from the top and ran through the printer as far as it could but got stuck on the way out. I pulled it out and presto!
MP830 PGBK does not print, tried new cartridges
the printhead probably needs to be taken out of printer and cleaned. just pop the ink cartridges out, then remove the print-head, fill a sink full of warm water, and swirl the print head around in the warm water. Blow through the color slits on the print head into the sink full of water it will get messy. empty the sink full of colored warm water.rinse and repeat till your are satisfied its clean. dry it off with a cloth towel you don't care for, because it will get messy and covered in ink.put your printer back together and it should work...it may take a few times...but i got my printer 'PGBK ink cartridge' working again doing this. or you can spend 100 bucks and buy a new print-head...my printer is a mp830 it came apart easily no tools or force needed... good luck and don't break your printer...its easy.

Computer doesn't recognize printer
I have never had a problem like yours. But it looks like there is nothing wrong w/ the USB cable, the printer or your PC. So the only area left would be the software printer drivers in the PC. Have you tried uninstalling the canon printer drivers and re-installing them? I am not sure but I think the problem might be more software than hardware. Some of the files may have gotten corrupted. Let me know if this helps.
