Vicks V3100 1.2 Gallon Humidifier leaking

Check if the cap has a gasket or o-ring and is not worn. There are two designs for this model. The older model has the fill cap and valve together. The new design the fill cap and valve are at different locations. The new design has no hole in the bottom of the unit.
You can fixed the problem using a 1-1/2 inch washer for brass tubular found in the plumbing isles in HD or L. The rubber washer is 1 or 2 mm smaller then the grooves in the fill/valve cap. You can stretch the washer and it will fit perfectly in the grooves. When putting the fill/valve cap back with the washer, it will be tighter then before. Firmly turn and you should not have any leaks and make sure unit is level. You can plug the hole because the new design does not have a hole in the bottom of the unit.

Before I returned it I would clean it thourghly and refill with clean water and about 1/4 teaspoon of table salt. Run it thru a full cycle and see if that helps. You can also rinse it out and refill with a 1/2 cup of vinagar and run again. This shoul help loosen and clean any mineral deposits. Hope this helps. Thank you.

I left my humidifer on

Since this unit apparently does not have a low water shut off feature, if you have a friend or neighbor that has a key to your home, I'd contact them and ask them to please go to your home and unplug the unit. Doing so, will prevent the motor from over heating and burning out.

When we run the humidifier

The humidifier and it's tubing may be clogged with calcium deposits and scale. Especially so, if you're using well water or your city's water has high calcium deposits.

Empty whatever water is in the unit and refill it with a 50/50 solution of White Vinegar and Bottled Distilled Water. Allow it to sit for 30 minutes and then turn the unit ON. Once you feel moisture coming out, allow it to run anoter 10 minutes or so. Then turn the unit OFF and empty the remaining solution (if any is left). Now, flush the system by filling it with Bottled Distilled Water and running it.

For future use, I'd recommend that you use nothing but, Bottled Distilled Water.

I have a Vicks V3100 and dont know how to put it together

There is a Wicking Filter that is also the same media that creates the humidity. This filter looks like rolled up paper media(like for a swamp cooler). This filter installs at the back of the unit with the water resevoir removed. The water then is absorbed by this media and as the air passes through it humidity is released into the air. The Wicking Filter will need to be replaced when the performance of the unit decreases and the material becomes hard from mineral deposits. There is also a Protec Cleaning Cartridge that looks like a small plastic ball with a stem on it. Inside this cartridge are softening agents that remove hard minerals and extend the life of the Wicking Filter. The Cleaning Cartridge is just simply placed inside the water resevoir. To prolong the life of the Wicking Filter and unit make sure to use clean and cool water. Distilled water will work the best if available. The harder the water you use the more the unit will need cleaning due to hard water. When the unit becomes clogged with diposits you will need to run a solution of vinegar and water through the unit to clean it. If you use distilled or filtered water(reverse osmosis) then the unit will rarely need cleaning.
