Will fill with water but nothing else. stops and makes no noise at all

I would suggest one place to start is your lid switch. If it is not working properly, the washer may think that the lid is still up and it will not advance until the switch is made. With the lid up, take a small screwdriver or other small stiff object and stick it through where the pin on your lid would go through and see if you here a clicking sound. If you do not hear a clicking sound, your switch is probably bad and needs to be repaired or replaced. Hope this helps!
Washer will take water but will do nothing else.
Can you advance the timer manually to the wash cycle? If so? Does the washer start agitating? If it does? your timer motor has failed. You may find the motor only at a used appliance store, other wise replace the timer. Try advancing it before you do anything.
Roper washer
That could be your lid switch. You should hear an audible click when you shut the lid. If the washer act like it is trying but won't spin that could be the drive coupler. I have a page which includes a service manual
