CANNOT INSTALL ON WINDOWS 7
I have many years repairing Canon Scanners so maybe I can help you.
I assume you are running Windows 7 because of how you worded your question. I went to Canon's website to see what drivers were available for you there. The closest thing they have is Vista drivers which may or may not work for you. But its worth a try to install them they are close to Window 7 drivers. Try and install them this way.
First unplug the cable from you scanner to your computer.
Second go here http://www.usa.canon.com/cusa/support/consumer/scanners/canoscan_series/canoscan_n1240u#DriversAndSoftware
(copy this whole line into your web browser or click on it to see if it will take you there) Then download the drivers from Canons website and install them. On install it will tell you that the drivers are not digitally signed for your operating system do you still want to install them just say YES and complete the install.
Third once the drivers install it may ask you to plug in your scanner (make sure your scanner is powered on and ready to use) then plug it in. If at the end of the driver install it doesn't ask you to plug in your scanner then just plug it in but make sure it is powered on and ready to use.
Fourth A window may pop up after you plug in your scanner to your computer and it should say a new device or drivers are being installed. Once this completes its install I want you to reboot (restart) your computer. Once your computer comes back up after the reboot you should be able to scan.
If this does not work as I described it to you then contact canon either by phone or email and ask for drivers for Windows 7 or even beta drivers if they even have those available yet.
I hope this helps you out and if it does please give me a YES that you were helped. Thank you.
HOW CAN I CANNOT INSTALL MY CANOSCAN 12400 OU ON
This is very easy to do all you will need is the drivers to install your scanner with. Here is the link to get the drivers you need.
http://www.usa.canon.com/cusa/support
Scroll through the menu to select the scanner drivers you need. Before you install these drivers unplug the scanner from your computer. Then download and install the drivers. Turn your scanner on so it is powered up, plug the scanner back into the computer. A window will popup saying a new device or drivers are being installed. Once that completes its process reboot (restart) your computer and you now can scan from your computer.
I hope this helps you out, if it does please leave me some feedback.

I need CanoScan n1240 driver
I have many years repairing Canon scanners so here is my suggestion to you.
I would google the model scanner you have Canoscan n 12540 with driver on the end. It will take you to canon's website. Download the latest drivers they are free, and you may want to download capture perfect too because that is also free and it will help you with your scanning of documents or pictures.
I hope this helps you out.
Scanner not printing as states insufficient memor
I have many years of experience repairing canon scanners so here is my suggestion to you.
Your problem is a common one with all scanners, they use a lot of memory to process the images your scanning in to your computer. My suggestion is to up grade your memory if you can, preferably to at least 512mb then you have now but preferably to 1 gig. Then you will be able to scan anything you want to.
I hope this helps you out.
