IBM ThinkPad T20 2647 Notebook Questions & Answers
My computer is slow. What can I do without
Depends- where is it exactly slow? is it while surfing the internet, or when running progrmas? either way, you can make it go faster.
If your internet is slow, you should scan your computer for viruses and spyware using suitable programs(for example-
avast anti virus or
spybot). If you still experience the same problem I would advise you to delete the computer after backing it up, and then installing a new copy of Windows.
if your problem is with programs running slowly- I can advise you to download this software, which can extremely help-
CCleaner
Thinkpad T20 won't recognize usb port
You can get a PCMCIA adapter with 4 USB v.2.0 slots on eBay. It requires power from the USB port on the laptop, but the pigtail connector is included. Works like a charm! Comes from China just like everything else in this country.
Forgot password ibm thinkpad 2684-H8U
Screen password...... There are 3types of passwords that can be set on a thinkpad.
- Hard drive password
- Power on password
- BIOS/ CMOS password
Of these 3 only the third is recoverable or changeable without a lot of tinkering and disassembly. By removing the battery, power adaptor and the cr2032 battery inside the laptop for 1 hour then replace and the password should have cleared.
password 1. You will need access to the HPA area of the hard drive and a few lifetimes of manuals and knowledge to get the password backif it's recoverable or even accessible.
password option 2. You will need to find the "Atmel 24rf08c" EEPROM on the laptop motherboard and then EEPROM dump it's contents then scroll down many lines of code until the password appears on the right hand side.
Replacing cmos battery
Hi
the little devil (cmos batt.).. is under the main battery, undo 1 screw, swap battery. it's take 10 minutes only.
My IBM Thinkpad won't turn on after improper shutdown.
Always check power supply first. Ensure green/orange charging light appears in the LED bank near the screen bottom when adapter is plugged in. If NOT then charger or battery (or motherboard) is faulty.
A dead battery shouldn't cause a shutdown, so the charger is the first suspect. The yellow power socket can become 'rusty' in some cases so inspect this also. If the contacts inside aren't clean & shiny then try some WD40 after scraping gently with a 1 or 2mm flatblade screwdriver (with the battery OUT). If not even a P.O.S.T. (Power On Self Test - IBM logo)
appears with the CDROM and Hard Drive removed, Try cleaning the memory and swapping its position on the back of the unit. Good Luck.
Compter on and running but no LCD image
Have you connected to an external monitor, just for fun? Try that, don't run off the battery, in fact, take the battery out. Use only the ac adapter for power. Now boot pressing f1 repeatedly until you get into bios. Just let it remain in the bios screen for a few minutes, long enough to prove you don't have a hardware problem such a s the inverter going out, etc.
Then allow it to continue to boot to windows. If it appears on the external monitor (may need to hit Fn+F5 or F&, to utilize both monitors), but not the system monitor, it's possible you've got a bad piece of hardware such as an inverter going out, or even the backlight failing.
If there's no image on either monitors, but you hear the usual sounds of windows booting up completely, it gets tricky.
First think is to update to most recent bios.
Floow the directions from the Lenovo site for the T20. Use the floppy image; it's just easier.
Good luck.
Let us know how it's going.
My IBM Thinkpad won't turn on after improper shutdown.
Two things have me confused. Improper shut down (how did it happen) and "it won't turn on", it won't power up or windows will not start up. Just a little more information and you'll probably be flooded with answers.
