Small Engine Carb Repair Tool: Mini-bike Go Kart Scooter Moped Racing - Answered Questions & Fixed issues
Hi, I have a 1981 Honda g400 motor with no spark. I'm going through the system and need to know the points gap please. Also is this old enough to have low oil cut out? Thanks Nigel.
Hi Nigel.
Not an expert by any means, but the information I can find suggests .018" (18 thou) for the points gap.
There are two ignition types for these engines, a magneto (old style) or a CDI (Capacitor Discharge Ignition). Not sure if that has points at all.
To double check, the points should open at 20 degrees before Top Dead Centre. As the cam is fixed to the crankshaft, the points gap will affect the timing.
Regarding the low oil shutoff, it's not mentioned in the data I have, so maybe not. You can check though. The oil level sensor should have 1 or two wires coming from the crank case. one going up to the coil primary. That wire is grounded when the oil level is too low. If you think this may be stopping the engine from starting, you can disconnect it. But make sure the oil level is correct!
Enjoy...

1987 fc50 honda scooter wont turn over yet there is power
if it is electric start
you need a new starter solenoid
if it will not turn over on the kick start
then your engine is seized to solve the problem for this
remove you spark plug and put some thin oil down there and let it soak
for a day or two
remove the side casing and turn it over on the flywheel nut
until it is free
give it a few more turns and get the old oil out then
put your spark plug back in and start it

How to install a big bor kit on a 50 cc scotter
It's a pretty big job. You need to be competent (and confident) with tools as well as diagnosing and repairing gas engines. Without knowing the details of your scooter, the overview is this: 1) Remove the carburetor (if mounted to the cylinder), exhaust pipe, cylinder head, cylinder and piston. 2) Have the cylinder bored out** to provide the correct clearance between the cylinder and the piston (if different from the scooter manufacturer's clearance this information should be provided by kit manufacturer). 3) Modify the head (more machine work to reshape the combustion chamber to work with the larger bore). 3) Reassemble. 4) Modify the fuel system (usually a carburetor) to correctly fuel the now larger displacement engine. 5) Get the new set up running and then tune it to run properly without damaging itself from an incorrect fuel mixture.
** Some cylinders are aluminum with a steel sleeve that forms the bore that piston runs in. Some are aluminum with a thin nikasil coating on the aluminum bore. These will be much more expensive to bore out as they will need to have the coating replaced after being bored out.

Gx610 Honda v-twin small engine one side want fire
Hi, If you did the usual testing (comp,Carb cleaning, etc.) then I would go to the electronic ignition box if it has one. I've been fooled before. Checking for spark, wire off, or plug out, isn't the same as a plug under compression , Good luck.
