Passport 8500 Radar Detector - Page 3 Questions & Answers
Getting false laser readings, any adjustments?
This is fixable as described in other threads here. This is annoying and seems to be random, though it also does it sometimes when the wipers are turned on or I use the windshield sprayer. 2 minutes with a smal Philips screw driver and a Q-tip will fix it. I just did mine and it works great now.
Unscrew the three screws, pop the three components apart (it really is a no-brainer since they only fit back together ONE WAY, so don't be nervous. There is not anything that is going to fall apart or spring into a hundred pieces in there.
I used canned air to blow everything out and just used the Q-tip on the front window and the parts that looked like the detector window internally... I didn't bother swabbing all of the board.
IT WORKS! GREAT FIX!!!!! DO IT!! NO MORE FALSE LASER ALARM WHILE ACCELERATING and randomly.
It say need service...
Unfortunately the unit will need to be returned to Escort as there is nothing that can be done on your end.
Not getting power...
Fuse in the power cord ok? Fuse in the vehicle's ligher socket ok? Does the lighter socket power other devices? Power switch is in the "ON" position?
Check these steps first.
Says service required when turn on
"Service required" means that the detector failed the self test when it was powered on. I would call Escort at (800) 964-3138 and see if they are able to repair it.
Passport radar detector says service required
I also have one of these but I have never sen it ask for a service, I guess your question is??? How do you service it? Or where do you service it? How do I remove the service light? Why is it asking for a service? You need to provide more information including what steps you have already tried so we don't repeat what you have already done. Remember we are here to help as best we can without a visual, This is the best I can do for you, sorry, try to contact,

Passport 8500
Service Required means that your 8500 has repeatedly failed while attempting to calibrate its radar antenna. This can be fixed by Escort for free if your RD still is in warranty. There is a service fee if your RD is out of warranty, but at least Escort will fully test everything in addition to repairing your 8500, and they will upgrade your 8500's firmware to whatever their latest and greatest firmware is which may help to improve sensitivity, reduce false alerts, or to detect newer laser gun models.
I also have a 8500 passport that flashes laser and will go off
Does this happen in the city or does it happen when you are out in the middle
of nowhere? I have seen laser detectors that are falsely triggered by various
lighting devices that contain wavelengths of light similar to those used in
police laser.
If this is annoying and you dont want to hear it, you can locate the receiver
element that detects the laser signal and cover it up with a piece of black
electrical tape. That should stop whatever is causing your problem unless there
is something actually broken inside the unit.
Thanks,

Starts going off when a higher speed is reached
THis is a weird one! The only thing that makes sense is some sort of interference that is impacting the electronics inside the detector. Sometimes ignition "noise" can cause this behavior. I have seen ignition noise so severe that a Garmin GPS would not work inside the car.
Can you test this without moving the car? If you rev the engine while the car is parked, does the detector still go off? This will allow you to determine if there is some form of intermittent operation inside the detector caused by solder joints, etc., or a problem associated with electrical noise.
BTW, what type of car do you have?

Scroll down a few posts and a guy "blokhead" posts the solution to the "laser" problem. And then another posts some pictures. I only took out the first 3 screws, opened it up, pulled the circuit board out, and then used a tiny screwdriver to seal up the gaps around the metal box around the laser sensors. I also tightened up some of the tabs that hold the box to the board. It definitely had some little gaps that had opened up over time causing RF interference.
The guy says if he ever fixes it again he may use some foil tape to completely seal it, I might do the same, but it appears to have fixed the laser issue when you press the gas, and an issue with my keyless remote lock. It would laser everytime I left it on and locked/unlocked the car.

False Laser Detected/Other
IF this happens when you first get into the hot car, the problem is likely to be that the electronics in the unit are too hot. If the problem goes away after the car cools off inside (assuming you have AC), then your unit has just become overheated.
